Hi, my husband was diagnosed with stage one, grade 2 bladder cancer a few weeks back. He’s had the tumour removed and 6 weeks of chemo. We are now waiting for the hospital to contact us for another scan to see if it’s gone or returned.

like everyone else it’s a very scary time, especially given that so many people have said that their cancer has returned! In one respect we are thankful that it’s stage 1 but apprehensive that it’s grade 2! Is there anyone here who’s cancer hasn’t returned after treatment?

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to our friendly and supportive group. Grade 2 is medium to high risk of returning and you just can't predict which way it will go. Once the bladder has settled down, your husband will have further up checks to see how successful things have been. Whichever way things go, there will be follow ups and things will be managed so try not to look forward too much. BC can have a good outcome. Try and stay away from Google. One step at a time is the way to go. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Denise C,

There are lots of people who have been treated and the cancer has not returned - many of those are living their lives and so aren't on this forum much.

All of us who have been treated are checked regularly for the first few years to catch anything that might not look so good. And it's not just re the cancer - during my regular scans there have been signs of non-cancerous things that have needed to be attended to and they have been. It's very helpful, I feel, that they take such good and close care of us, so that although it can be a bit nerve-wracking having these reviews I try and see it from this angle rather than always expecting the worst.

For what it is worth, I had Grade 2/3 cancer (it changed during chemo but as the oncologist told me - what it was when they removed it is academic now). I have never paid too much attention to stages and grades - they are just there to guide the medics on treating us, not for us to worry about.

My bladder was removed over 2 years ago after Gem/Cis chemo and later some immunotherapy. My latest CT scan was clear and I am now being reviewed 6 monthly (it was 3 monthly until now). If the cancer comes back they'll treat me again but until it does I ignore it.

It takes a bit of practice to think like this but I do advise people to try, because cancer mustn't dominate my life - there are far too many interesting and important things to do besides worrying about something that may never happen (and if it does, the medics will do their best to get rid of it for me).

The best thing cancer taught me (and there have been many things) is to live now. Worry does not cure cancer, nor any other illness.

    All the best,
