Good evening. A quick question to all urostomy bag users, how do you clean the night drainage bag? I’ve been using warm/hot water to flush it out every morning and then hang it to dry. My stoma nurses have previously mentioned using Milton as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. X
Thanks Jane. Could you please elaborate on your method?? Do you use Milton tablets or liquid and how much do you use and how many washes through the bag? I want to sterilise the bag but don’t want to overdo it in case I cause damage to the bag. X
Looking on line it says not to use Milton’s so I don’t want to give out the wrong information. The stoma nurse mentioned Milton’s and that’s why I had used it in liquid form.
Hi Jane. I was also told by a stoma nurse to use Milton. I just wanted to know the amount/dilution needed. You’ve been using it without issues so hopefully should be fine…lol. Anyway it’s routinely used in sterilising baby’s milk bottles so should be pretty safe I should think. X
Hopeful786 Save yourself the grief & switch to 'Clinisure Single Use Drainage Bags', as here: https://www.clinimed.co.uk/product/clinisure-non-sterile-night-drainage-bag/ Just empty it out in the morning, pop it into the black disposable bag & bingo, another good day starts :-)
Thanks so much. I shall definitely look into this. X
I am using the Simpla Profile Urine Collection Bags. Not single use but they have a nicely designed and long hose that is sort of concertinered and flows really well. As opposed to the sometimes overly rigid drainage pipes. Leo
Thanks Leo. It’s not the type of drainage bag as most of them do the same job but it’s about reducing the chances of bugs growing in the drainage system that I was querying. Hence my question regarding using a disinfectant while rinsing the bag and pipe. ATB.
I change mine twice a week. Any more that that the bags start blowing up - bacteria? fungal? disposable bags sound like a good option.
Hi Hopeful786
I’m a Milton fan here. I use it a lot in the house in other places like mugs etc so follow the same principles-a cap of Milton liquid per litre of water. I prefer to let everything soak for a time, then drain, and leave everything in the sink to make sure the tubing and connector have had time in the solution before rinsing.
I would rather do this personally, as I generate enough which goes to landfill in my life without adding daily disposable bags to that. I find it sufficient to change my night bag on a weekly basis.
Sarah xx
