My husband has just had his second treatment. He’s fine, but the problem is, we have a septic tank and there’s an awful lot of bleach gone down the loo as instructed - but we’re not supposed to use bleach. The nurses didn’t have an alternative - can anyone here help please? I don’t think we can be putting bleach down on a regular basis. Thank you.
Thank you so much, it’s good to have such great support. I’ve just read through the thread. Hmm, unfortunately we don’t have an acre of garden and I’d be a bit hesitant anyway about polluting the area. We stay in the hospital for the first 2 hours, so that leaves just 4 theoretically, and we get home about 6-ish (an hour each way to the hospital here!) but we thought it might be safer to continue overnight. Maybe there may be other ideas.
Hi Rosie49.
We have a packaged system, so not dissimilar to a septic tank, and I had this same conundrum. What I did last time was not flush the loo for the first 6 hours (my sole use as luckily we have another that my wife can use). I then gave it a good spray with flash with bleach and let it sit for half an hour, followed by 3 flushes one after the other. The system seems to have coped and is still working well. Maybe I was lucky?
Hi
I have a septic tank and here is what I do :
(o) I return straight away from the hospital and wait for 2 hrs before I wee
(o) I wee into a bucket in the loo and then add a load of bleach
(o) I take the bucket to the garden and dump into into a bush far away from access by humans/pets
(o) Rinse, rebleach and repeat the dump
My consultant is OK with this approach.
Halofan . Hi Angela. Really sorry I missed your post (not like me). Bit late now, but to tag someone, type the "at" sign and start typing the name. A pop up list should appear. Click on the name you want and that person will be notified . Best wishes.
Thank you very much for the information. Unfortunately, our garden isn’t huge, and we have 2 cats, so I can’t do that. It’s still a major issue for us so I’m going to try Klargester who supplied the septic tank. My other thought is that surely someone, somewhere could put me in touch with a microbiologist. But thanks again anyway
I’m getting really concerned about this. The Klargester people have confirmed that we should NOT be putting this amount of bleach into our septic tank. Please can someone help - a microbiologist perhaps? We can NOT discharge the urine + bleach into the garden. We need someone to find us an agent different from bleach which will neutralise the BCG. This is URGENT as the third week’s treatment is on Friday, and we’ve probably already ruined the biological action of our drainage system. There MUST be an alternative to bleach. Thank you.
Hi I'm not too sure on this, but couldn't stay silent when I read 'Klargester'. I was a basic grade lab tech for Anglian Water Sewage division 40 years ago!
Just wondering, would an oxygen 'bleach' such as Napisan used to be, if you can get it, neutralise the BCG with less destruction to the sewage treatment 'bugs'? The oxygen loses its reactivity once wetted and mixed with biological materials.. It's less toxic anyway than sodium hypochlorite, which is pretty persistent. I'm afraid some careful label reading will be necessary, decades away from cloth nappy processing I have a nasty feeling that napisan may have been reformulated possibly including more bio-toxic ingredients.
If you can get Napisan or other oxygen bleaching agent [hairdressers hydrogen peroxide solution could be one], if you could store the treated urine in an open/ventilated bucket for a day or two, it would be much less risky for the Klargester I think.
Could you ask Klargester again if I am right?
