Hi.
I'm curious about something. I have HG T1 bladder cancer, and I've had 2 TURBTs and have started my induction course of BCG. I've had 3 of the 6 doses.
Since TURBT No. 2 and the beginning of BCG, I've noticed somewhat frequent, but tolerable, kidney pain.
As I don't see my urologist very often, I asked my GP/internist about this. He did a physical check of me and ordered both complete blood panel and urinalysis. Afterward he said all the indicators were good. His opinion was don't worry much about it ... that bladder cancer and BCG treatment could be causing some bleeding and/or inflammation, which causes pressure up and down the urinary tract. Further, he said referred pain was indeed a possibility.
I guess my question is this: Have many people here noticed some kidney discomfort as part of their bladder cancer experience?
Thanks.
Mark
Hi MarkinUS
My cancer was actually in my renal pelvis, therefore I did have kidney discomfort, mainly a dull ache in the left side below my rib cage. Luckily for me my bladder remains clear after removal of kidney and ureter.
I wish you well on your continued journey and hope the pain eases.

Hi Mark
I have the same diagnosis as you G3 pT1, have had 2 TURBTs and have had 9 BCG instillations. I don't get kidney pain but I do get bladder pain which I put down to BCG working it's magic in my bladder I find that I worry about new aches and pains though, and I am always concerned that it may be due to Bladder cancer. I do try hard to not let my imagination go into overdrive and as you have been checked out by your clinicians you may also need to relax about it and check whether your kidney pain is being caused by something like an uncomfortable sleep position or poor posture. Just an idea
Hope you can find the cause and stop worrying.
Love Ade xx
Thank you all for your thoughts.
I am by nature a curious person and a reader, and I tend to think there's a discernible answer for everything, even when there necessarily isn't.
It's OK. I do worry, but I generally go to bed just grateful for the day.
I find bladder cancer sometimes painful, sometimes puzzling, and all in all just plain odd. But, that said, I'm grateful for the care I have and to be in the fight.
It's a journey, I suppose, and all of our journeys are a little different.
Happy to have all of you to talk with.
Thanks so much.
Hey Mark
I was in hospital again on Thursday having another Cystoscopy/PDD under General anaesthetic (my 4th one this year) and had a conversation with my surgeon, I told him I was still stunned to be in this situation. Every time I go for BCG therapy I find it almost unfathomable to be there. It is a long and hard journey to navigate and you are right, it is just very odd though I am very grateful for the excellent care I receive from our wonderful NHS

Ade,
I'm sorry to hear of the difficulty of your journey; mine has been simple by comparison. I admire your resilience and courage.
It is all very odd, isn't it?
I go for my BCGs on Friday afternoons at my urologist's office. A medical assistant administers them, and I'm out the door in around 15 minutes from my name being called.
Then begins the 6 hours of bleach and whatnot, etc, and the two days of "Huh, wonder what the feeling was about!"
Again, not complaining ...it's all just so weird!
Three more to go, then a scope in January to see how we've done.
It sure isn't boring!
Mark
Hi Mark
I had red patches in my bladder after the 6 week BCG induction, they turned out to be inflammation but it was scary waiting for the results. Then I had my first round of maintenance and another red patch was found at the PDD/Cystoscopy last week so more biopsies were taken. More waiting for the Pathology results now.
I hope your next 3 BCGs are uneventful and you have a nice clear scope in January.
Love Ade xx
Hi Mark,I had a lot of kidney pain at the beginning.I had symptoms of kidney stones though the scan didn’t show them.My urologist thought it likely that I had passed a stone, the pain was very bad.Post cystectomy I had kidney pain again when there was some swelling with both due to a complication.By the next scan they were ok again.Best wishes
