Hi Laura again I’ve wrote a few times about my dads journey past few months , and his RC in beginning of September, we had to go and see his consultant today for the pathology results of the op ..
guess what :)
no spread , no lymph nodes involved All cancer removed.
i cried as the anxiety we have had waiting for these results has been awful , dads doing amazing 5 weeks on too for anyone going through this op soon , he’s even exercising again daily , he looks really good !
anyway now the bad news
he’s been advised to have 3 rounds of chemo ( not compulsory) but they think he should as the grade was very high just to “ mop up “ as they called it . Is this a normal thing to do do anyone know ?e has agreed to the chemo & has been referred but I can tell he’s very uneasy about it
thank you if you read this far

Hi Laura, that is wonderful news that your dad is doing so well. I dont have experience to share advice on the chemo post RC, I am sure someone will be along soon to help you out. I just didnt want to pass up on the good news and send you my best wishes
Much love Angela x
Hi Laura,That is great news. They do sometimes offer chemo before or after cystectomy.Hopefully someone who had it will be along to tell you more.I had a cystectomy but no radiotherapy or chemo. It’s good that your dad is exercising but he still needs to take it steady as it’s very early on in his recovery.Best wishes to you and your dad.Jane x
Owen777 . Hi Laura. Nice to hear from you and good to know dad is recovering well. After any treatment, there is always a minor possibility that there may be an undetected microscopic cell floating around. The aim of adjuvant chemotherapy is as you say to mop up as a precaution. The chemo treats the whole body. I had a different treatment, but did have six sessions of chemo and tolerated it well without any real effects besides a bit of tiredness. The usual drugs used are Gemcitabine and Cisplatin (Gem/Cis) or similar. Some people get some form of nausea but they give you pills to prevent this. Chemo lounges are usually sociable and upbeat and not all doom and gloom as you may imagine. It can be a long day in the chair so dad would need to wear loose and comfortable clothes and shoes. Plenty of snacks and drinks and something to keep him occupied, tablet, mags, phone etc. Although on a drip all day, you are not pumped with drugs all the time. Most of the time it is just a saline solution to keep the kidneys healthy and the drugs just a short time in the middle. I was willing to take everything they could throw at me. I hope this helps and if I can help with anything else regarding chemo, please ask. Best wishes.
Hi Laura,
I had three cycles of Gem/Cis chemo before surgery. Having the chemo is okay, they do tell you all the side affects before you sign to agree to the treatment, but you will not have them all and may not have any, I personally did suffer with constant nausea and a metal taste, but you are given plenty of anti sickness tabs to help with this, I also had to do daily injections in the stomach as on heart tablets.
Chemo is definitely worth it though as I have been cancer free now for 18months!
I wish your dad well on his continuing journey

Hi Laura.
Brilliant news for you and your Dad that all the cancer has been removed. I'm so glad to hear that he is recovering well from the RC and I'm sure that his team will continue to look after him in whatever course of treatment they feel is best for him.
Sending you love and good wishes as you both carry on through this journey.
Love Ade xx
