Hi all

I had my TURBT on Friday and got home last night. So far feeling okay, less pain than I thought I may have. Doc seems happy that he has managed to get all visible tumour and didn't insert chemo, not sure what to read into that as I was still pretty groggy when he was explaining it! Tumour was about 5cm. Obviously still waiting for pathology to confirm grade and stage. Glad to have it out so that I can get to know what I am dealing with, the waiting time so far has been the worst. I have discovered that there is loads of info and support on this forum from dipping in over the last few weeks, and also that although I thought I knew a lot about cancer I had not realised how every case is individual so treatment varies. I'm still hoping for the best outcome when the pathology comes back but at least a proper treatment plan will be in place based on what is found, and I know where to come for testimony of folk who have lived experience.

  • Hi Deacon P,Welcome to the group.I’m glad you have been finding it helpful. The waiting is horrible but things should get easier once you get your results.Take it easy and keep up your fluids.I hope you recover quickly.Best wishes Jane

  • Hi  and a welcome from me. Lots of support here as you move forward so don't be afraid to ask anything. Good to know you have had your TURBT. They don't always use chemo afterwards for various reasons. A few weeks wait now to find out the next step. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Thanks Jane, trying to make sure I'm drinking plenty to flush the bladder out.

  • Thanks rily. One thing I wonder about is how long to keep the surgical stockings on for? The hospital didn't say and I'm still wearing them. The medics were extra careful because my mother died from blood clots so the family history played a big part in my prep for surgery.

  • Hi DeaconP, a warm welcome from me. I found the waiting for results is the hardest bit. once you have a diagnosis and treatment plan in place , as you say you will know what you are dealing with. If you have been given a nurse specialist, they are a godsend for information. , I would contact the hospital/ urology team or medics for advice about the surgical stockings. There is always the macmillan helpline to speak to a trained nurse as well. Hope this helps

    Much love Angela x

  • Hello Deacon P, I had to have some minor surgery last month not bladder related. One thing I abhor is those stockings, I always need assistance to put them on. To my delight the sister booking me in said they no longer use them, they have found out after all this time that they're not as effective as they originally thought. Apparently they put something on your feet and legs prior to the surgery and after I was knocked out.

Now I don't know if that is just for that hospital trust or it's going to be nationwide. But I for one won't miss them and it must save a lot on their budgets.

  • Thanks, I agree they are not the most comfortable things. I called urology and they said to wear them for a wee while yet. Possibly my family history makes a difference

  • Hello Deacon P, we all agree the waiting time is very difficult to deal with. However, once you get the results and a treatment plan is put in place the anxiety reduces. The unknown is the elephant in the room. Stay well and good luck with your treatment. Garviv

  • If they haven't bothers to instill chemo at the time of the turbt that seems to be good news or was in my case. Thur removed all the tumour and decided it wasn't necessary or rather couldn't be done due to resection of my left uretic orifice. Chemo after the fact would take 6 installiins over 6 weeks to have the same effect. It only lessons the chance of reoccurrence it doesn't stop tumours from occuring again.

Glad you feel well and don't seem to have any pain, for me it was dreadful for the first 5 to 6 days and on and off for the full 6 or 7 weeks.
