Hi I went to the doctors with a problem with my prostate and I got put on a two week wait on the cancer pathway at the consultation MRI with contrast my prostate seemed fine but they’ve come across a problem with my bladder. They said I’ve got pockets in my bladder, I’m suffering from a lot of problems with urine and suffering a lot of pain in the lower abdomen and back I’m now having to go on the 2nd of September for a flexible so they can have a look in my bladder in my kidneys to see what’s going on. I’m still on the cancer pathway i’ve just been sat Stewing in for a month Probably be nothing am I just being silly!

  •  . Hi Paul and welcome to the group, although sorry to hear of your concerns. The not knowing is always a worrying time. Not come across the term pockets before, but good to know they are doing further investigations. A flexible cystoscopy is a fairly straightforward procedure. Painless but sometimes a bit uncomfortable. You will be able to see for yourself on screen if anything untoward is going on in your bladder. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Paul 1977,Welcome to our friendly group.I’m sorry to hear about the problems you are having.Of course you are not being silly. You have urinary problems and they need to find out the exact cause.Do you get urinary infections ? At the flexible cystoscopy they should be able to see clearly how the inside of your bladder looks. If they find any area that needs a biopsy you will be asked to come back again for a TURBT procedure. This stands for Trans urethral resection of bladder tumour and is a cystoscopy done with a rigid scope.
You have a general anaesthetic for a TURBT.A TURBT can be done for non cancerous conditions as well as cancer.I had them in the past for suspicious red areas that were caused by Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome.
Let us know how you get on with your flexi. We are all here to help and support.Best wishes Jane

  • Hi rily

thanks for the warm welcome I couldn’t think of the word they did explain to me in Laymans terms that is what they meant they said They have to look inside the so called pockets to see what’s going on because the mri has brought something up also I’m under two consultants is this normal?

  • Thanks Jane I will do

  • Hopefully the Cystoscopy will give a better picture of what is going on and what can be done to help you.

  • Thanks winkers60

I hope so too you’ve been a great help

  • It’s an anxious time waiting but you have come to the right place for support. The flexi only takes a few minutes it’s a quick procedure.

  • Hi Jane

yes I know I’ve had one back in 2000 but I’ve been having urinary problems since I was about 17 years old now I Seem to have no control of my bowels as well as my urine I was very embarrassed and kept it hidden for years, but it has effectived my work my life I was told back in 2000 that it was ancestral cystitis Which i inherited from my mother bless her my wife made me go to the doctors after I kept it from her for years she has been so understanding

  • I’m so glad your wife is understanding. My bladder problems started when I was 20 and I’m 63 now so I can empathise.I hope something can be done to help you.Jane

  • A common medical term that might be 'translated' into layman's terms as 'pockets' is 'diverticuli' It's just Latin for the same thing.

Many people [such as my mum] get them in their bowel. The potential problem with any pocket where ideally you would not have any, bowel or bladder, is stuff getting stuck in the pocket and becoming infected due to not flowing through when the bowel or bladder empties. Hope that helps?
