Hi All, been a few weeks since I've been on the forum, I start 4 weeks Radiotherapy this coming Monday, and am not due to see the Oncology Consultant till middle of September. My question is what happens after the 4 weeks and the gap till September, is this basically just a time to let good cells heal, and how do they know if cancer has gone. I don't know and nobody has explained to me, maybe I'm just jumping ahead and should let things run, but I'd rather know what if anything surgical may be required
Thanks
Scott
Hi Scotvip . The RT continues working for several weeks after treatment finishes, Then it takes a while for any inflammation to settle. Hence the long wait. Then there will be some scans and a cystoscopy, usually under GA with biopsies. The Rt sessions only take about 15 minutes and are painless, but there is usually a bit of waiting around . I hope it goes well. Best wishes.
Likewise, I wish you a successful RT course with minimal side effects. Are you having a chemo follow-up? My RT was rated as palliative, 2 weeks, medium dose, and followed up with a CT scan (with intravenous dye) after a few weeks. I did not experience any severe side effects except for a few days of the runs. A few months later I had a TURBT under GA.
Your treatment will of course be tailored to your situation. Don't hesitate to ask your Oncologist about any concerns you have or questions you would like answered. I compiled a short list of questions which the wonderfully supportive Macmillan nurse answered after tracking down my busy Oncologist to consult.
Best wishes, Ray
