Hi,

I was first diagnosed with Bladder cancer 2008 3 stage 3's tumours, mitomycin at first and then 3 re-occurrences up till 2012 and a 6 week course of BCG then 6 monthly, yearly and finally given the all clear in late 2019. Was 48 back then, Roll on the year's and 2023 just when I'm thinking of slowing down and going part time it's back diagnosed in March 2023 just when a big shake up at work and was made redundant. Don't get me wrong It was time to start slowing down at post 60 however I didn't mean to put a full stop on work. Now on the 3 year BCG treatment and it is knocking me for 6. Into hospital every 3 months for cystoscopies under G/A which I worry about each time and then the BCG treatment in absolute pain for 2-3 days peeing scabs/ blood and general discomfort. Am tired/ struggle to have any energy and just not able to consider a full time job. Would like to do something part time but again get the occasional need for urgency to go to loo.

What do people do for work, went to the job centre to try and make a claim for JSA. I have never made a claim before and been in my last job for 25+ years they basically threw me out of the door when I said I couldn't do 35+ hours. I went in looking for something part-time, they told me to get a fit for work note! What's peoples experiences in claiming any benefits and or working?

  • Hi GrahamY

my story was i am currently self employed, was unable to work more than a few hours a week due to long covid , that was ok for me . However when i got the bladder cancer etc the nurse on my team ( i think she is macmillan did a care plan , where they do a needs assessment . She organised a welfare rights adviser to come and see me. They were great. I know there is a financial helpline on this website. Rily would know. Hope that helps.

You beat it once , you can beat it again .

  • Hi Angela

many thanks for your reply, I was 48 first time around and with support from work managed to get through it the first time round, also needed to have a full knee replacement done at 52 which left me unable to run, in daily pain and mobility issues which they haven't been able to fix. I'm now post 60, been made redundant and still willing to do something but finding an employer is well nigh on impossible. I have a pension which I've taken early which gets me by but just struggling with this second round. Its now starting to affect my sate of mind on top worrying about where to find the money just to keep warm, What should have been a comfortable time is becoming a nightmare. I'll talk to my nurse tomorrow when I go for my next cystoscopy under G/A. best wishes.

  • Hi GrahamY

my heart goes out to you, sounds like an awful time. I can imagine the bcg side effects would be enough to lower your spirits, but added financial /work worries would drag you down. I hope they will point you in the right direction, my nurse organised it directly and the adviser came to my house. I was delighted with the care and help. I hope the hospital you attend gives as good a service.. Take care
