Advanced Bladder Cancer

I have recently been diagnosed (September) with Bladder cancer that has now spread to my Left Pelvic Muscle. My consultant has told me i have a realistic chance of surviving for 2 years. Is it normal not to be offered any treatment, i am fairly fit and healthy and i am still working as the only issue i have is pain management for Sciatica type symptoms.

I believe it must be really bad if they have not offered any treatment

  • Hello  and welcome to the group. Sorry to hear you have not been offered any treatment. Have you though about getting a second opinion.? Another doctor may come up with some ideas. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi frrom france,

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. As a doctor (and wife of a man who underwent a cystoprostatectomy fifteen months ago), I can tell you that a treatment proposal must be made to you. If the disease is very advanced (which must have been established by imaging and TURB), you should be offered a non-curative but alternative solution, such as a urinary diversion, for example, or localized radiotherapy on a site affected by the disease and which is the seat of the pain). Talk to your doctor about the possibility of immunotherapy. If you don't get an answer, ask for a second or even third opinion from specialized teams.
I hope you have supportiv family and friends

  • Hi billz4,Welcome to the group. You certainly should have been given a reason if no treatment was offered.Even if bladder removal was not an option things like immunotherapy are sometimes possible.I would be seeking some more clarification about your situation and a second opinion as the others have suggested.Stick with us for support.Best wishes Jane

  • Thanks for the reply. I will get in touch with my Specialist Nurse and see why i have not been offered any treatment then take it up with my GP for a second opinion

  • I hope you get some answers and can get a second opinion.Best wishes Jane

  • At last got to see an Oncology Specialist today and will be starting chemo in around 3 weeks time. A good meeting where i found out it has not spread to Lymph Nodes and looks on the scan to have just attached itself to my Pelvic Muscle. So fingers crossed

  • Hi billz4,Good to hear your meeting was helpful .Best wishes for your chemo, that should help.Jane

  • Hi  . Good to know you now have something positive happening. I had 6 weeks of chemo and didn't find it too bad. I hope it goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Good evening from France,

Good to hear that the battle begins ! Keep in mind that chemotherapy is your friend. You may feel tired or nauseous (but there are VERY effective preventive and curative medicines available). Don't go to chemo sessions with apprehension, remain in control of the situation, don't suffer but collaborate. This has been our decision with my husband 18 months ago. Take care of yourself, treat yourself to little (or big !)  pleasures and give us regular news.

    I will pray for you

    Best wishes

    Catherine

  • Thanks Catherine.

I at least found out it is Stage 4 that is localised as it has only gone into my Pelvic Muscle which is causing me the most pain (constant sciatica symptoms) I am of the mind set that what will be will be, but i will not let this define who i am or what i do (until i am physically) unable to do otherwise, I am under no illusion i am more than likely going to feel absolutely crap at some point but if it can help then the crap is worth it.
