Histology Report

I have my OP meeting with the consultant tomorrow following 2nd TURBT, during which I am informed I will need to make the treatment decision.

1st OP meeting advised T1pG3 with potential focus of squamous differentiation. I would dearly like to review the pathology reports either pre or directly post OP meeting, but it appears that these wont be available to me, the patient who has to make the decision, until 3 months post procedure and some time after a treatment decision is made. I am at a loss to understand why this is the case as I would like to understand all available data/information/tests before I commit to a procedure that will change my life.

This isn't a mistrust of the consultant advice, but rather that they will release the information to me eventually, but at a time when it is redundant.

Is there a way to get these reports to review now?

  • Hi  . I don't know why you have not been given this information. People can usually be copied in to all consultation notes. I have copies of all my notes going back ten years detailing everything. I didn't have to ask. They were always posted to me automatically. These notes should also be sent to your GP, so maybe try there. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • I have requested all notes, and have received some (radiology mainly), but not all. My most recent request was for the histology reports, but nothing provided so far, and the "patient portal" lists them as available but restricted up to 3 months post sample submission. This doesn't seem right as I will need to make a treatment decision before I can read them.

I will be repeating my request when I see the consultant tomorrow, so lets see how that goes

  • Good luck tomorrow.I’m sure the consultant will let you know what this second histology showed.I presume the Squamous cell aspect is what is most important to your decision ? As my urologist said it does tend to spread as it’s aggressive.Best wishes Jane

  • I understand that you feel you need all this information, but do you have the scientific knowledge to interpret the report adequately? How will it influence your decision making?

Remember that a MultiDisciplinary Team will have reviewed the results and recommended treatment options based on their expertise (& NICE guidelines). Probably more important is to ask the consultant more about pros & cons, risks & benefits of each option - perhaps ask what they would recommend for a relative of theirs & why.

I was able to read mine by chance (well after decisions made & enacted) but it didn't tell me much more than the consultant had told me. There was other information that I found more useful in making my choices. I expect my post is  a bit late, hope your consult goes well.

  • Hi Teasswill. Have made the decision without reading the histology reports following a detailed and open discussion with the consultant, but I personally, have a need to interrogate all the available information to build my understanding of the issue .. and yes I do have the necessary scientific understanding. Would have preferred to have the reports before the meeting though.

Have come away with the histology reports today and although this is personally a very significant issue, I still find it interesting and like to build my knowledge .. every day is a school day. :-)

  • Certainly the information should be available for those who wish. I'm glad you have been able to get them. Very best wishes with whatever comes next for you.
