I have posted on here several times about my plight due to BCG cystitis. I have had this problem for well over a year now. Today has been a particularly bad day so I rang my CNS to try and get some support. She stated (as she normally does) it will eventually improve but it's a job to accept that when it can be so debilitating. I am back on Amitriptyline (only been on it for 2 weeks) that has given me giddy spells which is a side effect. I don't particularly want to come off it because it's a slow burner and can take 6-8 weeks to help quell the pain. I can put up with the discomfort it's just the unpredictable pain that gets me. She recommended I speak to my GP (easier said than done) to perhaps get something stronger for the pain.
I have just started Ialuril monthly top ups hoping that will help the damaged bladder lining. I know I am exceptional case because most patients don't have this BCG long term inflammation. I do take a mixture of paracetamol, ibuprofen and cocodamol. Admittedly I'm not a lover of taking painkillers but sometimes needs must. The big upside is I am cancer free (so far) as the BCG worked too well. I don't want to come across as somebody always complaining because obviously I know there are people on this site who have suffered and continue to suffer from this horrible disease. Thank you all for listening.
Hi Jacaranda07 . Really sorry to hear you are still suffering. It must be having a real impact on your life. Really hope your GP can offer some help. Best wishes.
Thanks riley, yes the bladder becomes the focal point and your life revolves around that. The nurse said try and ignore it and get on with life, which of course I try to do as best I can but as you can imagine it's difficult to do when you know it has a mind of its own. It's like it's waiting to pounce and then it can become a psychological problem.
Apologies for the spelling of your name my phone insists on changing things at will ironically a bit like my bladder.
I’m sorry to hear you are still in pain. When I had Interstitial cystitis I found the bladder pain was far worse on non steroid anti inflammatories like Ibuprofen.I wonder whether switching to something else might help ? I hope you can get some help from the GP.Best wishes Jane
Thanks Jane, I think you are probably right about Ibuprofen. I do tend to shy away from it if I can, I know it's not good for either the kidneys or liver. I'm hoping the GP can come up with something that will be effective. Can I ask did you try amitriptyline and if so did it have any effect on the pain?
Take care Chris
Hi Chris,I never tried Amitriptyline though I have been given some to try for nerve root pain from arthritis.I’m not a great fan of medication but perhaps I should give it a try.I feel for you bladder pain is draining and miserable.Did you try acupuncture ? I found that really helpful.Jane
No I'm like you always sceptical of drugs, I have this fixed mental thought that they can do more harm than good. Having said that I had 6 months of chemo for my bowel cancer and that saved my life although it did leave it's mark with peripheral neuropathy.
I have given thought to acupuncture it's just finding the right practice.
Yes it’s important to find a good practitioner. It’s a shame you are not nearer as I could recommend the one my sister and I used. It’s worth considering.I felt better all round and it helped with sleep too.I was extremely skeptical beforehand but it was my urologist who said it might help.
I had acupuncture on my Achilles tendon after being knocked off my bike 20 years ago. The physio, who was qualified to do it, very tentatively asked me if I would consider it after his conventional treatments had hit a plateau on recovery. I said 'if you think it could help try it,' and it did shift the improvement back into gear until it was recovered. Never had any trouble with that ankle since either. The only problem I had was that although it was strictly medical and only new sterile needles were used, the blood donor people took exception. Oh well.
Hi Jacaranda07,
Bit of a late reply... I hope your cystitis is better. I have had (and hopefully it will remain in the past tense) bladder cancer and was treated with BCG. And... I have also had a fairly bad inflammation to the bladder as a side effect. I have had it now for 2 to 3 weeks... I think it's something to do with the immune system... mine is always overreacting... the only thing that seems to work for me is 2 ibuprofen + 2 paracetamol, like you say... it seems to work for one to two hours... so I take that before going out... I do really hope this inflammation will get better for all who get this side rffect...
