I had surgery 4 weeks ago, I’m home now with two drains. I flush every 4 hours, however for the last few hours nothing has been draining and I’m concerned.

has anyone else had this issue and if so any advice.

msny thanks

  • Hi, best call your hospital team for advice, rather than risk a problem developing. Hope you get this sorted,

  • It’s been 5 years since my surgery and there are things that maybe I would like not to recall, but I do remember having mucus plugs during this period. I’m thinking you should be irrigating with sterile solution back and forth with a large syringe. Emptying the contents into the neobladder with some force and then sucking it back out with the syringe and discharging the contents into a tray and then repeating. The pressure of the discharge should be breaking up any mucus plugs and forcing it into solution. I recall irrigating from both directions. I do remember that they recommended every 4 hours but I think I remember doing it more often to avoid plugging up. These are vague memories , but I definitely remember trying to pull back as much as was pushed in, Orillia.

  • Hopefully someone will come along with more recent experiences. Good luck,

  • Each hosp seems to have different protocol. Can you be more specific as to what/where the drains are? I came home with 5 different tubes & 4 bags, putting saline into three of them, variable output from each of them! Make sure to drink plenty of water at regular intervals - sip frequently rather than big glasses less often.

  • Each surgeon within each hospital has different protocols! I came home with a regular catheter and one other. My 'cancer buddy' came home from the same hospital with three.
