I went with my husband today to Leicester to discuss surgery once he completes his chemotherapy course which hopefully starts next week.
He has T2N0 M0 muscle invasive bladder cancer. We were told today that chemo and surgery will only add 5% on top of his survival rate?
we were floored, to go through months of treatment for 5%?
The consultant said at best he has 75% chance of being here in five years. It has scared us so much as we were told that the chemo and surgery is for curative intent. Now it feels like we have a ticking clock.
My husband is so upset and now says why go through a year + worth of treatment to gain a couple more years after? we feel like our hearts have been ripped out.
He is otherwise fit and healthy 61 years old yet feels like he’s been written off :(
It is so very early for you two in this process to feel very positive about anything. A cancer diagnosis feels like the end of the world. IT’s NOT !!!!
First of all you have to look at the statistics , and basically that is all the very wisest of specialists will rely on when giving you a prognosis.if he says that you have a 75% chance of not dying a cancer specific death in 5 years , you have to imagine yourself in a room with 100 people in it. In 5 years there will still be 75 of you left. I’ve looked long and hard at every graph and every study predicting long term survival with all the many circumstances taken into consideration and they all overwhelmingly prove that if you make to 5 years cancer free after cystectomy with clear path results your cancer specific survival chances are in the mid 90% ranges . I’ll take those stats any day ..Heck .... you’re chances of getting killed by a car are almost that high. At this point you have to be convinced that you are going to be one of the 75 who still have a chair when the music stops. What you do from this point on is do EVERYTHING in your power to give yourself the best chance. Toss out all the bad habits , eat for your health, exercise like an athlete, sleep like a baby and most importantly check the defeatist attitude at the door., there is no good place for it. Not meaning to be harsh , but you and your husband need to apply the war paint and get your Irish up. Celebrated my 5 year anniversary last month , after initially finding out that my specific prognosis carried a median survival rate of 14 months. Orillia.
Hi
Just echoing Orillia about the stats. No consultant will give you 100%, but 75% is quite good. Try not to think about percentages too much. Each cancer free day after treatment increases the chance of survival and each case is different. Most types of bladder cancer are treatable and the survival rate over 5 years is good. Again, there is nothing magical about 5 years it's just a marker, so just concentrate on having the treatment moving on. I was given an 80% of a cure and that was five years ago, which I regarded as very good odds.
