Hello all

So my Cystectomy was on the 17th of August and I really thought I would never feel good again at times.

But here I am 6 weeks post-op and am feeling more human at last. Despite having a couple of setbacks. One is an infected drain site that is still being treated and another is a horrible sinus infection that is clearing up after antibiotics.

The bowls have finally settled after having severe diarrhea and actually lost control for a while.

I can now wear my jeans again!!! The bonus is I have lost over one stone because my appetite was seriously affected and I wasn't eating chocolate and biscuits,  I still can't eat them which is actually good. lol.

One question: I am struggling with the night bag and often find myself waking with a full stoma bag as it's not draining. This means I have to sit up and wiggle it so it drains.  Any tips gratefully received.

I do hope you are all well. Love Jenny xx

  • Hi Jenny . Good to hear you are picking up and feeling a lot better. Can't help with your night bag problem, but I am sure someone here will have an answer. Best wishes for your continued recovery.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Jenny,My stoma is on the right and I sleep on that side and it drains well into the night bag.If I turn over then I have the same problem as you and wake with a fuller bag.I’m glad you are starting to feel a bit better.I hope your infections clear up soon. The bowels seem to cause so many issues after cystectomy.I had severe constipation rather than diarrhoea.Weight loss is very common.I lost a stone in hospital and a little more at home.I was thin to start with so looked so gaunt especially in the face.Once the lockdown started I was doing less and eating more and I put on 2 stone.I’ve lost half a stone since then but don’t look fat.Hopefully you will just keep on improving and building up strength. It does take time but you’ll get there.Love Jane xx

  • Hi Jenny

Glad your improving and long may it continueThumbsup

I have my surgery 20th this month so as many of you I will be laid up awhile

Did you have robotic or open surgery? I am down for robotic but have been told open surgery may happen if issues arise I’m hoping not but in the lap of the gods eh!!

    wish you well

  • Thanks Jane you have been very kind and helpful xx

  • Hi Lorraine. I was told the same as has scar tissue from my hysterectomy but they managed robotic so that was good. Good luck and I hope all goes well for you xx

  • Thank you Jenlids

Ive got stoma clinic 14th, bloods 17th then I’m good to go!

I suffer badly each op with sickness regardless and recovery slow and lately blood pressure drops very low so it was suggested a tube down my throat to drip feed.  I told her not sure I like that idea

when you said the drainage got infected where is the drain situated?
Im not looking forward to my bowels being messed about as I have diverticulitis so I’m hoping it won’t kick off. Still I’m sure in the scheme of things that’s a small price to pay.

    much love

  • The drain site was just right and down a bit from the stoma. Only got infected because the nurses missed taking out the clips so they were in far too long.

Good luck Lorraine I am sure all will be good. Keep us updated

  • Thank you oh just another question please did you choose which side the iliac bag sits

    Lorraine

  • I wasn't given a choice Lorraine so automatically thought that everyone had it on the right side

    Jenny xx

  • I wasn’t given a choice either Jenny.I think they are usually on the right hand side.Love Jane x
