A stoma nurse came yesterday to remove the stents and she said I needed to change to a convex bag .She fitted a sensura mio convex which felt good .But this morning I woke up soaking wet the bag had leaked from the top the bag wasn’t full so not sure what happened not sure what to do now .
Hi Susb,As well as Lolly1’s suggestion check to see whether your stoma shape has changed. In the early days post op the stoma can shrink down a lot.I had leaking and realised I had cut the hole in the bag too big as the stoma had shrunk.I used the template in the supplies to measure the stoma until it settled to the size it is now.Love Jane x
I have a convex bag - mine is a Hollister (previous version). It has the normal sticking area, then an additional sticky plaster type ring around the edge. This makes it very secure. Advice from my stoma nurse was to gently use the heat from my hands for 45 seconds after applying the bag. I find that one extra minute of care when fixing a new bag makes all the difference. The holister bags also have a sort of belt which attaches to the bag to keep it extra secure. I have the belt, but have never felt I needed to use it.
IN bed, I have the night bag in a bucket on a stool at my side. I also have a face towel, when I turn over at night, if I turn to lay partly on my bag, I hold the bag to make sure I don't bend it, then I use the little towel just to pad & support the part of the bag sticky top to make sure I don't risk levering it off.
I would advise that you make contact with the stoma nurse to review the stoma. I am wondering has it retracted slightly ? It’s very hard to know what to advise without seeing your stoma . Now that the stents are removed the stoma may have changed . If you are having continuing leaking then the base plate or bag clearly isn’t right or the right size . You may have creasing in the skin which is causing the fluid to get through . I would be concerned if the surrounding skin breaking down if you are continually leaking
Susb - I've been using the sensura mio convex bags for months and had had very little problem with them. As mentioned earlier holding the adhesive plate in place very firmly for a minute or so seems to ensure a good contact. I also then gently run my fingers around the outer edge to ensure no rucks. The only bag leak I recall was due to being out in a very warm humid atmosphere abroad, which I think caused the adhesive to soften possibly due to sweating. Call the Stoma nurses and ask for help, that's what they are for! Good Luck.
