Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

Hello.

I’ve already posted on the forum as my husband has just been diagnosed with BC.   I’m now doing a bit more digging as things come to mind  as it’s all been a blur

The consultant who did the cystoscopy said it was a “flat bladder cancer”. My husband then got referred to another consultant (privately) who asked him if he’d ever been to Egypt as it could be linked to a parasite - schistosoma hematoebium (we’ve travelled, and been to Egypt but have never swim anywhere remote).  I’ve looked it up and, if it is that, then the BC is SCC which is fast growing and can invade the bladder muscle so bladder removal could be necessary.

Obviously, I’m now really really worried.  I know I should wait until the diagnosis, but... does anyone have any experience of this BC?

Thank you so much

  • Hi again.

I've just looked again (I know I shouldn’t) and flat cancer can also be CIS which are likely to come back.  Is this different from SCC?

We have to wait another week for the TURBT ..

  • Hi . SCC is very rare and we don't see it here very often, although we do have members with experience of it. Really strange to hear of the Egypt connection. It is always tempting to search for information, but there is a lot of misleading, incorrect and out of date info out there. Best to stick to recognised sites such as Macmillan. Mac have produced detailed info if you click HERE . Just saw your updated post. CIS is common and can be treated. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

    • Hi thesunalwaysshine,I had Squamous cell bladder cancer.I had Interstitial cystitis for over 30 years which ended up causing urinary infections. The repeated infections caused the cells in the bladder to turn pre-cancerous.After 14 years of monitoring in July 2019 I was diagnosed with SCC.I had my bladder removed in September 2019.I’m back to normal life and managing fine with the stoma.Love Jane x
  • Thank you Rily. I guess the consultant (on the phone) was trying to ascertain whether it could be SCC if there was a link to that parasite. I’ll try to stop searching now.!

  • Hi winkers60 (Jane). Thank you so much  for sharing. I’m out of my mind with worry so it’s very much appreciated. I read that SCC can be linked to regular bladder infections. So glad to hear you’re doing well.   X

  • I had a thick scaly mass obstructing the bladder entrance. My symptoms were either not being able to pass urine or going every few minutes, there was no visible blood in the urine.I think you will feel better once your husband has had biopsies and the results. The not knowing what you are dealing with is hard.Once you know it is easier in some ways.Love Jane XX

  • Thank you, yes, you are right. Maybe be 3-4 weeks before we know for sure. A living hell. X

  • How is your husband coping ?

  • He’s been amazing. Worried about me, which is silly. I’m trying to be strong. The kind people on this forum help me keep my worst fears from him. X

  • I can understand your husband worrying about you,I felt the same about my partner and sister. They were anxious but supported each other as they are good friends.I voiced all my worries on this board and everyone was so supportive and that helped so much.Don’t feel you have to be strong all the time.Love Jane xx
