hi all, my Mum has recently received a stage 4 AC diagnosis with liver mets. Her biopsy is this week but since the colonoscopy she hasn’t got out of bed and is literally wasting away.
she’s on oramorph once, maybe twice a day but has gotten so weak. We’re giving her both the laxative drink and protein drink from the GP and trying to keep her strength up with regular meals and snacks. She recently lost the ability to move her arm, and spends most of her time in bed on her right side.
will there be the possibility of the hospital keeping her in post-biopsy?
Hi Willkade95fb
Welcome to the forum. Im sorry about your mums diagnosis it sounds like she is going through a rough time. I wasn't kept in after my biopsy, it was just a half hour appointment a local and then home. Having said that all situations are different, i would contact the hospital before hand to find out or speak to her GP. Sorry not to be much help. Sending hugs. Xx
Hello Willkade95fb
I am so very sorry to hear about your Mum and her diagnosis. I'm afraid I would be guessing if the hospital would keep her in or not, I think it would all depend on whether they had beds available and if they were in a position to investigate before getting the results of the biopsy. She sounds as if she is going through a really rough time, and the GP seems aware of just how poorly she is, could you put pressure on him to investigate getting her admitted?
I am really sorry I can't help more, I am thinking of her (and you) and hope she gets some relief very soon.
Big hug
Irene xx
Not an expert on this in any way, but I wonder if your Mum might benefit from talking to someone from Macmillan or a local cancer charity if you have one nearby or connected to the hospital - it sounds like she is really struggling with things.
You might want to talk to someone too. Trying to support and help your Mum is tough for you as well but once you are all aware of what the treatment plan is and she starts to feel some benefit from it and relief from her pain, you may all feel a little more positive.
Please let us know how you all get on xx
I’m so sorry about your mum’s diagnosis and that you are both going through what sounds like an awful time.
Your mum sounds very poorly, and I think it’s important to let the treating team ( if you have one yet) know about her presentation so that they can do a full assessment.
When I had my biopsy this was done under general anaesthetic in an out patient setting, so I don’t know about the potential for keeping your mum in for further assessment and care. Hopefully you can let the hospital know prior to the biopsy, and can explain how concerned you are about your mum’s deterioration. The MacMillan nurse will hopefully be able to advise.
I hope that you are both able to access some help and support at this really challenging time.
Sending hugs xx
Hi Willkade95fb
Welcome to the forum and I’m really sorry to hear of your mum’s diagnosis.
When I had my biopsy I didn’t have a GA because I wanted to get home as soon as possible so chose to have a spinal instead, however after the procedure I was kept in overnight for observation and went home the following afternoon, so I’d say there’s a chance she’ll be kept in overnight but I really couldn’t say for sure if they would keep in her any longer, although I would assume they would have to provide care if she isn’t medically fit to leave.
If you speak to the hospital though they should be able to give you some indication of what they are expecting to happen, when I queried my admission they told me the hospital bed had been pre-booked.
Please do let us know how you get on.
Sending hugs Monty xx
Hi Willkade95fb ,
Firstly welcome to the MacMillan Online Community although I’m so sorry to hear of your mums diagnosis.
I don’t think anyone here could answer the question you have unfortunately. It’s not usual to be kept in following a biopsy but having said that your mum really does sound pretty poorly! Are her medical team or at least her GP aware of how poorly she is & the loss of movement in her arm etc.? I think if possible a call to her GP to have a home visit would be a good idea so that she could be properly assessed & if needed a hospital admission arranged.
Do you think the way she is at the moment is that she is struggling with the diagnosis & has emotionally shut down as well as the physical effects of what’s going on in her body?
I really hope you both get the support you need. Just know we’re here to support you also, however we can. Please don’t hesitate to call the MacMillan helpline, maybe speaking with someone will help & they may be able to advise further. As well as this group, where you’re always welcome, you can also get some more support for yourself on our Family and friends forum where you can chat with others that are supporting a loved one that’s had a cancer diagnosis.
Please keep us up to date on how things are going. Thinking of you both right now.
Nicola
