Hi,

I was diagnosed last may with anal cancer both external and internal of my rectum. I had 28 days of radiotherapy and chemo tablets. This worked well and shrunk both especially the outside one.

I got to normality, however my 3 month scan showed a small bit inside and wasn’t sure if scar tissue or still a growth. I had a second scan which showed it was still cancer and was growing so started 2 different chemos. I had 4 months out of 6 cycles then a scan during that time I had a growth on the outside regrowing.

The scans showed the chemo wasn’t working so I’m now on a stronger one . IV every 3 weeks and 21 days of tablets, the problem I have is this IV chemo is causing either constipation or loose stools just can’t get it right.

I have been admitted to hospital twice in last 4 weeks one due to server constipation 5 days and ended up having a fall. Was given antibiotics for infection also laxido 3 times a day that helped but then had bad loose stools. Then last week I was constipated took laxido then loose stools really bad. Took my ant diarrhoea tablets which worked.

3 hours later I started bleeding from my bottom so I ended up in hospital, the bleeding stopped 3 hours later, my blood levels was low but did go up in the end so didn’t need a transfusion. Was in hospital for 4 days.

I took a laxido to help with not going to the toilet even though I was drinking plenty it wasn’t actually coming out just all in my sanitary pad and around my growth, just want any advice on how to get it right as it is taking over my life as I’m either constipated with pain and pressure or loose stools constantly.

  • Hi Husk I had very similar problems like you with my bowels swinging from one to the other and I’m five years post treatment and still occasionally suffer from constipation and then right after loose. I also have a damaged sphincter from two surgeries and the pelvic floor strengthening helps on the external sphincter but if the internal sphincter is damaged you cannot do anything. I was first put on the FODMAP diet which helped but was restrictive and I would take my own meals if we went visiting family or friends. I am no longer on it but eat foods that don’t constipate but are not high fibre. Google these foods and you can plan your diet from this. You eat foods that don’t rush through your digestive system to fast and are usually foods that also add fluids. This has really helped rather than taking laxatives. I hope this helps

  • Hello

I am so sorry that your cancer returned and you are now facing these problems, it sounds as if you are having a really difficult time.   has given some excellent advice about what helped her.   I also had bowel problems after radiotherapy and had daily Laxido but eventually I opted for a stoma which has made my life a lot easier.  But that doesn't help you, has your consultant suggested slightly less Laxido?  For me, one a day was enough to stop constipation which I found unbearable, you have my sympathy there.

I hope you get something sorted out quickly.
