I just completed treatment 4 days ago. Needless to say, I'm glad to be done but I have a question for all of you who have completed treatment as well. My biggest challenge right now is the burning and stinging during BMs. I usually have to go 2 - 4 times per day and each time I just dread it. How long before BMs become less painful and hopefully stop being painful altogether? I know it's early after ending treatment but this really causes a great deal of anxiety for me, especially if i have to go around bedtime. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi  welcome to the forum and well done on getting through treatment. I finished treatment on 6th November 2024 and poos were pain free by the 14th. If the pain is to much ask your medical team for stronger pain relief. I have seen some people on here have pooed into a full sitz bath as doing it in the water helped them. You are early days yet, I think most people turn a corner at the 2 week point, but we are all different. I just used to breath through it and do some weird standing and sitting routine. You will get there and this will soon be a distant memory. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Hi

Well done on getting through your treatment   you are now at the tail end and it's awful pain..

My doctor said it will be about 2 weeks of pain before is starts yo get better and when it does it will get better fast.. he was right.. about 2 weeks with the burning.. then it eases..

I agree with  .. I used my sitz bath for both wees and poos at this stage..it gives u so much relief ..do whatever it takes to take that anxiety and dread for having a poo..

I go to the toilet every morning now and it's pain free..

Stay strong.. it does get better soon

    Xx

  • Thank you Bungle1. Believe it or not just after writing this I had to go and I'm starting to notice some relief!  I ordered a sitz bath today which should arrive tomorrow. Hopefully that will help as well. Thank you for the kind response and advice.

  • Thank you Squeak. As I just mentioned to Bungle1 I believe I'm actually feeling some relief today. Looking forward to receiving my sitz bath as well. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I appreciate the advice and encouragement.

  • Hello Beekay, and a big welcome to the forum.  Well done - you are out the other side!  You just have to remember it is very early days and hopefully you will  see an improvement in your pain very soon.  The BMs are hellish, I know, and I am sorry that they are causing you so much anxiety.  We all got used to drumming our heels and roaring loudly whilst sat on the loo and I remember it well.  But it does pass.  Maybe a good couple of weeks yet.  But please keep in touch with your treatment team, it could be that your pain medication isn't strong enough to help you through these early days after treatment ends.

    Big hug Beekay

  • Hi BeeKay,

Welcome to the forum and big congratulations on completing your treatment. Such a milestone.
You are at the most challenging bit right now and I really feel for you with the eye watering BMs. The whole area is just so raw at this point.

I can see you’ve had some good advice and I hope that you find the sitzbath brings you some relief. Really keep on top of your pain medication too at this point as you will need it. I found that the pain improved a lot by the 3rd week after treatment when it seemed to reach a turning point. It honestly does get better.
    Wishing you well xx

  • Congratulations for getting through your treatment and hope the pain goes soon xxx

  • Hi  , another warm welcome from me to our little corner of the MacMillan Online Community & huge congratulations on completing your treatment.

You’ve received some great responses already so I’ll not repeat but remember we’re all different, our recoveries included. I found my side effects from my treatment didn’t peak until 11 days on from my last session so bowel movements were pretty painful up until & a little way past that. I found I needed stool softeners to keep things a little more comfortable & continued with those for around 3 years due to having anal stenosis, this has since improved & I haven’t needed anything for the last 4 years.

As has already been said it’s very early days for you yet but I hope the bit of relief you’re feeling is the beginning of your healing.

  • Hi BeeKay,

I've just completed week 4 and this burning/stinging is really getting to me too now! It's gradually getting worse, so can't imagine how awful it is post treatment... hope it calms down really soon for you. Im dreading the next few weeks and how bad it might get :(

  • Hi

I’m slightly behind you as I completed treatment 3 days ago. I didn’t really start with the burning or stinging until the weekend between weeks 5 and 6 but I think I’m a bit of an outlier as the doc commented each week how good my skin was and was very surprised that I was able to cycle each day throughout treatment.

I have noticed though that yesterday when I was slightly lose with a BM that the stinging was greater than it was today when I was slightly constipated again, sorry I can’t give any real advice at this stage but I hope your symptoms ease soon.
