Hello
I have just joined this group and hoping for advice & support
My mum who is nearly 79 got diagnosed with advanced anal cancer in Oct 23, she underwent an op to debulk the tumour and have a stoma fitted Jan 24 and then went on to have 5 & 1/2 weeks of chemo radiation which ended March 24! The tumour responded great to treatment and she was given the all clear last June…..but unfortunately the 6 month scan has shown thickening of the tissue and after biopsies, it’s confirmed it’s cancer in the same area! We have had an appointment in Christie’s for APR surgery, but it’s too big an op for her age and fitness levels! We have been referred back to an oncologist to discuss chemotherapy to try and control it
Its a very stressful time for my mum as she lost her partner of 43 years suddenly last Christmas
Thanks for reading xxx
Hi suzzie ,
Firstly welcome to the MacMillan online community although I’m so sorry to hear that your mums cancer has returned & for everything you’re going through as a family.
I don’t have any experience of chemotherapy to control a recurrence of anal cancer but maybe when your mum has her appointment with oncology it would be worth asking about any clinical trials or immunotherapy that are going on at present. I was part of a clinical trial but mine included radiotherapy which is obviously not an option for you mum having al ready been through the standard treatment for her original diagnosis.
Hopefully someone that can be a little more help will see your post & be able to advise.
Nicola
Hello Suzzie
What a difficult time for you all, and I am so sorry to hear what has happened to your Mum. Nicola has given some really good suggestions regarding immunotherapy and trials. The only other thing that occurs to me, is your Mum's health really poor? If so I can understand if they don't want to risk major surgery but if not, I think I would be asking for a second opinion. I should stress I am not medically qualified in any way and I may be completely wrong, I am just trying to think of all the possible avenues for her.
Please let us know how you get on, I am sending her (and you) a huge hug
Irene xx
Thanks Irene, my mum has decided she doesn’t want to have a major op (even if they would deem her fit enough)…thinks she’s fed up of being in and out of hospital! Hopefully she can have some treatment to control the cancer I’ll keep you posted
