Itchy skin

Hii,

I finished chemo/radiotherapy 12 days ago, and am starting to heal up and feel better but…

While I was on treatment I had itchy skin behind my knees, and was told to put some hydrocortisone cream on, then once I finished treatment my ankles became blotchy and itchy, and over the past week it’s spread to arms, legs, back, chest and legs! Everything is itchy, though not at the same time! The nurses said take antihistamine, I’ve tried 2 different ones and neither has done any good!

Has anyone else had this sort of reaction? It’s driving me crazy, especially at night,

  • Hello Sue

It sounds as if you have had an allergic reaction; I had one once to elasticated flight stockings and the red lumps ended up spreading all over my body in sympathy!

I am sorry that the antihistamine hasn't worked, I think perhaps flag it up again to your team as you may need something stronger, there are other medications available on prescription that may help more.  Itching at night is the absolute worst, the body seems to go into overdrive when in bed, unfortunately.

Sorry I can't be of more help, let us know how you get on if you follow it up again.

  • Hi Sue you have my sympathy as I had exactly this two months post treatment my skin flared up so much from my ankles thighs back of calves lower back it was so extreme super itchy angry looking patches. My gp was unsympathetic and gave steroid cream which was not v helpful as the area needing to be covered was way bigger than one small tube of cream. Im convinced it’s treatment induced (inflammation/auto immune) plus lymph not working so well plus hormones dropping. Night time is also tricky as it’s dry and itchy having said all of that I don’t have any solutions except coconut oil and trialing a huge number of other natural creams. The redness is less now but it’s still dry and itchy (I’m now six months post treatment) good luck with healing and recovery, all best wishes with this.
