Haven’t started the chemo radiation but son is graduating college in June ( 13-16 is trip). Obviously I really want to attend this and have plans etc, any advice or thoughts?

just diagnosed and still getting all scans etc, did tell the nurse navigator and she agreed important and somewhat indicated moving radiation etc.

anyway just wondering if anyone had experienced this. Thank you so much!

  • Hi  ,

I don’t have any experience of your situation but I think it will all hinge on the dates you get for the start of treatment. Do you need to travel for your son’s graduation? I’m presuming from your post that it’s not going to be just a day long event & it sounds as though you’re possibly going to celebrate outside of the day of his graduation? I suppose for me it would depend on my staging etc., & on advice from my treating team how urgent it was that I begin treatment before those dates. You’re looking at 9 weeks away from now so you’ll be delaying treatment by 2 months but I also completely understand this is a once in a lifetime event for you as a mother & your son so it’s an important event for you as a family. I honestly think this one is for a discussion between yourself & your oncologist once all of your scan results etc., are in. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

  • Thank you, o did mention and treatment will be starting ut it sounded like the could move a radiation appointment etc, and yes flying to it.thank you!

  • Hello Ewagirl

I completely understand you want to plan ahead for what is a big event for you all.  Assuming your treatment starts in a month you would be at the tail-end of the chemo/radiotherapy.  Whilst some people recover quite very quickly I think most of us would have really struggled at a big event, both with the travel (bowels can be very iffy) fatigue and very sore nether regions.

However, if you are talking about delaying treatment until after the graduation, if you aren't suffering bad symptoms at the moment, you would be fine.  However, the nurse navigator wouldn't know the ins and outs of your case and your oncologist will tell you if s/he thinks this is the best course to take.

If you are two-three weeks into treatment you may be fine, but please bear in mind that no one person has exactly the same reaction to treatment.

I am sorry, you are between a rock and a hard place and I honestly don't know what I would do.

Best of luck, and I am sorry my reply may be less than useful.

    Irene xx
