On May 14, 2024 I was diagnosed with anal cancer that had spread to lymph node(s) in my right groin area. I was treated according to the Nigro Protocol with 33 rounds of radiation and 2 rounds of 96-hour straight chemo. My first PET scan after treatment (Sept. 2024) came back NED. PET scans in Dec 2024 and Mar 2025 showed elevating uptake levels in the right groin, which led to a biopsy on April 1st, 2025. I just received the results yesterday - positive for squamous cell carcinoma. Has anyone else been in a similar situation and, if so, what was the treatment? Thanks in advance for the feedback!
Hi FunnyFarm ,
Although I don’t have any personal experience of recurrence I just wanted to pop on to say I’m so sorry you’re facing this right now after going through the slog of treatment. It sounds as though your treating team are moving quickly though so hopefully it won’t be long before a plan is in place for treatment to rid you once & for all of this damn disease. Hopefully someone will be along soon with some more helpful advice for you.
Nicola
Bungle1, Thank you. I'm really hoping to hear from someone with experience. This is scary, hugely disappointing, deflating, depressing, etc., etc....
I don't know what to expect regarding treatment. Will it be surgery and/or chemo? If surgery, to what extent? I received the results on my healthcare portal - have not spoken with a doctor yet. My appointment isn't until the 15th of this month, though I'm hoping to get an appointment sooner, though I can't even attempt that until Monday because the office was closed today.
Sorry for the rant.....I just have so many questions and am feeling so much uncertainty right now. I'm thankful for this group and the ability to connect with others for support and answers....and be able to vent!
Hi FunnyFarm,
Im really sorry to hear your news about return of cancer and all the understandable feelings you are experiencing. Really shocked learning of how you found out the results and haven’t been able to discuss with anyone or get any plan.
I haven’t had experience so can’t give any guidance on this but hopefully others on the forum will reach out and share experiences.
Sorry that this has happened and that you are left holding the news and worry over the weekend when you just want to speak with your team.
Hugs to you xx
Hi again FunnyFarm , firstly please never feel like you need to apologise for letting it all go here, this is a place where you can vent or rant away until your hearts content knowing we’ll all understand exactly where you’re coming from!
I’m presuming from a couple of things in your previous posts that you’re possibly in the US?
Learning this news from your healthcare portal & not having a Dr in front of you to discuss next steps with must be so distressing! Your mind must be literally running wild right now! Then the thought of having to wait another 10 days before you can get some clarity on moving forward must be torture so as soon as your Dr’s office opens on Monday morning I’d be putting in a call to try & bring that appointment forward.
I’m kind of pleased we have a different system here in the UK as being faced with all that medical information with no one medically qualified to explain it all properly would terrify me.
I hope you manage to get your appointment moved forward, please let us know how you get on.
Nicola
Hello FunnyFarm
You must be absolutely reeling right now, I am so sorry that you have had this news (and also the way you found out, the mind boggles). It is obviously going to be a long weekend for you.
I don't have any experience so can't offer anything useful and I would be guessing at what treatment may be offered. However, your treating team seem to be on the ball and hopefully they will put an effective treatment plan in place very quickly; I know that isn't much consolation to you right now, you must be in absolute turmoil and my heart goes out to you.
I hope you can speak to someone very soon who can give you the facts that you need to help allay your fears.
Sending a big hug, FunnyFarm
Irene xx
