Hi, sorry to ask such a weird question but I just need reassurance that this is normal. I finished Chemoradiotherapy on 24th December and the side effects have been brutal but this weekend I feel like I'm turning a corner but I'm experiencing an itching feeling all around my rear passage, I know I can't itch because my skin is open & still weeping but it's driving me crazy, especially at night. I'm applying Flaminal Forte which is what I was told to use as was advised that the Flamazine can sometimes be uncomfortable in that area. Has anyone else experienced this? Please say it's normal because it feels like I'm back at the beginning of diagnosis again xx
Hi Ballerina,
Im sorry you’rnot to have anything more experiencing this.
I can only speak for myself and say that I had this too for weeks post treatment so think that is normal.
That doesn’t make it any easier to bear though.
Tried many things and nothing gave complete relief. The sitz baths helped but am sure you have been doing this. The flamigel I had didn’t soothe it. Sudocrem helped slightly. Pawpaw ointment helped too.
I still have some residual intense itching particularly at night and am going to discuss when I see the Consultant on Wednesday to see if there are any further options. I’ll report back to you if I learn anything useful.
Sorry I don’t have anything more helpful to offer other than to reassure you that it’s not unusual.
Sincerely hope it improves very soon.
Virtual hug to you x
Hi Ballerina ,
This is quite common during & after treatment, many of us here has suffered the dreaded itch, it brings a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘ants in your pants’!! I took Piriton antihistamines & it seemed to calm things down enough to sleep etc., & I lathered on the creams I was provided with by my radiotherapy team at my last appointment, I also enjoyed many a soak in an Epsom salt bath although advised on using these now seems to different from team to team. The radiotherapy obviously causes burns to the skin & my theory on the itching is it’s part of the healing process, to do with the new skin forming but also that area is packed with nerve endings & they must suffer some damage too so it’s probably got something to do with those repairing & coming back to life again. If it persists even with the antihistamines & creams just give your treating team a call to see if they can suggest something to ease it so you’re a little more comfortable.
Wishing the very best of luck in your recovery.
Nicola

I never had itching but it truly sounds unbearable, especially since you are unable to have a good old scratch. It is a common theme amongst some forum members and you have had some good advice, which I hope works for you.
I really hope this stage passes very quickly.
Irene xx
