Coming off chemo

Hi, I am in week 3 of treatment and got a call from the hospital on Tuesday to tell me to stop taking the chemo as my white cell count and platelets are low. As much as I don't mind coming off them as were making me nauseous, I am concerned that I am only now getting half the treatment which will effect the success rate.

Has this happened to anyones else / is it not uncommon?

TIA

  • Hi Jlan,

I’m sorry to hear this. Not what you want, even if they are causing nausea. I know that this is why they monitor the bloods so carefully. This didn’t happen to me so I have no guidance to share, but hopefully other forum members will get back to you.

I hope they can give you more information at your appointment today. Xx

  • Hello Jlan

    I answered you on another thread but in case you missed it;

There are quite a few people who have had to stop chemo because of side effects and just gone on to have the radiotherapy and the outcome generally hasn't been affected, so I wouldn't worry too much.  The radiotherapy is definitely the main part of the treatment and you have already had over two weeks.

That said, I am really sorry you have had these various side effects right from day one.  Hopefully it will be plain sailing from now on.

    Big hug

    Irene xx

  • Hi Jill,

I also had to miss some of my chemo tabs, firstly for a week due to a UTI which meant a course of antibiotics and secondly for a few days as my haemoglobin was a bit on the low side and I was given a blood transfusion

The main treatment is the radiotherapy, so please don't fret! The chemo is a supportive treatment alongside it. In an ideal world, we would take the full course, but it's not always possible for everyone. Our bodies react the way they do and your treatment team will do what's best for you.

  • Hi  ,

I’m sorry to hear your bloods aren’t behaving themselves just now! Try not to worry too much about having to come off your chemo, we’ve had a few people that have gone through the same & a couple where the chemo has caused heart issues therefore they’ve had to stop & it’s had no adverse effects on the effectiveness of the treatment.

From what I understand the chemo side of the treatment if you’re on the oral form (capecitabine) it is a cell division inhibitor so you’ve already done 2 full weeks & the radiotherapy will be well into the swing of doing its thing by now.

I hope your bloods recover quickly & you start to feel much better soon.

  • I was having heart spasms so had to come off the chemo tablets! I'd only had half of the course and, of course, was worried sick! It was explained that the radiotherapy was the main thing. I'm now almost 5 years post treatment, so try not to worry too much!

    Best wishes,

  • Hi

Like others have said i think the radiotherapy is the main part. I had a lower dose of chemo as my dpd levels are low. 50% week1 and 75% for the last week and I'm cancer free so far. Xxx

  • So glad you are cancer free, you must be so relieved. Xx

  • I am glad you are cancer free for 5 years, that has made me feel better Blush

  • Hi

I am also in week 3 and now 6 days off chemo tablets as the chemo has effected my liver function... I also panicked but team has assured me that this is fairly common and that the radiotherapy is the main part of the treatment. I have to have a scan this week to see why my liver reacted badly to chemo.. I have been assured it won't mean the cancer has spread but I'm still worried.

I have been told once I go back on chemo I will be on a lower dose

Wishing you well for the rest of treatment 1/2way there Muscle

  • Hi

I had to have a lower dose of chemo as my liver didn't produce enough of an enzyme called dpd. I only had 50% for my first dose and 75 % for the second dose. Im cancer free.  Sending hugs xx
