More pain since I last saw my consultant…

Hello lovely group,

So I’m newly diagnosed Stage 3 Squamous. It’s been 5 days since my colonoscopy so expected some bruising and pain/discomfort for which I have been give Morphine & Amitrityline.  It’s been hard managing but I’ve been told to keep topped up rather than wait for the pain then use the meds.

However the pain is no longer just in my bottom but I have sharp sudden pains down my left buttock & leg (my tumour is left side on rear wall). I will, of course, send a message to my consultant but just wondered if anyone else had had this?

I do recall he mentioned at one point they would have to check it hasn’t spread into my coccyx or other bones but had assumed they would have picked that up in the plethora of CT contrast and MRI’s I’ve had in the last 10 days

My PET scan is scheduled for Monday, just feeling a bit concerned about new pains!

Thank you x

  • Hi there ,

This pain you’re describing sounds very much like my sciatica, but you’re doing the correct thing by checking it out with your consultant. I have sciatica on both sides although on my right side it is there to some minor extent constantly & on the left, this is quite new, it comes & goes. My last surveillance MRI a couple of weeks ago was checked by my oncologist (sacrum & lower spine) for anything abnormal including disease & fractures etc., he then agreed, after clearing that scan, that it’s also most probably sciatica on my left side too…. I’m sure as you say your scans would have picked up anything sinister. I remember after my diagnosis & before I had my surgery & subsequent treatment I noticed every new ache & pain, things I would have maybe shrugged off before being told I had cancer & I convinced myself every pain was spread of this awful disease! Your mind goes to some strange places once you’ve been told you have cancer.

Put in that call to your consultant & hopefully they will be able to offer you some peace of mind.

    Nicola

  • Hi   like I have also had sciatica on/off since treatment. It is concerning when any new pain pops up, which immediately sets off a worry that it is related to the anal cancer. I remember having lower back pain during the process of diagnosis and worried that was related but it turned out to be just a coincidence. Then, I developed a cough and convinced myself that it had spread to my lungs, which it hadn't.  It's entirely normal to have these thoughts, all previous trust in your health can be wiped out with a cancer diagnosis.   I agree too that the scans you have already had should have picked up any further abnormalities in the pelvic area.  Hope all goes well with your PET scan.   Bev x
