So Hubby finished his five and half weeks of 5 days a week treatment on 19/2/2021.
He seemed to be doing so well and now boom it is like he is crumbling before me. So far he hasn't taken pain relief but the anal area is red, angry and blistered. He's got Flaminal Hydro gel plus Prontosan to soak on gauze first onto the area twice a day. But the urge to use the toilet hasn't got any better and he isn't really eating because he fears trips to the loo. The Royal Marsden is brilliant and the nurses have said it WILL improve but it isn't a lot of encouragement for me as the bystander wondering if I am doing the right things..
We are so grateful for all the help we have received and we hope that on 27/4/21 when he is next seen in clinic he will feel better and the treatment has worked.
Any advice and words of wisdom gratefully received.Cx
Hi ,
I’ve just replied to your post on another thread. I’m pleased your husbands treatment is finished but I’m sorry he still seems to be suffering somewhat. Things do improve although the timescale is different for everyone unfortunately. Please encourage him to use pain relief when he needs it, there’s little point in being in pain if there’s something that can help. Also if he’s not eating maybe he could get some meal replacement shakes, it’s important that he gets good nutrition so his body can heal efficiently.
I have everything crossed for his next appointment in April, I’m sure he’ll be feeling much better by then.
Nicola
Hi just to echo Nikki65 it really is worth trying the meal replacement shakes. Nutrition is so very important to help with a faster recovery. Sometimes, once treatment is over people can psychologically struggle more than during treatment. After my last treatment of radiotherapy I walked out of the room and burst into tears. To this day I can't explain why. Just let him know that you're there to talk or just listen to him, it's likely his anxiety will increase around the time of check up's/scans. All you can do is just be there for him, like you have all the way through this. He will most likely be very tired now so don't worry if he sleeps a lot, I once slept for literally about 18 hours the week after treatment! Bev x
Thanks Bev. He never liked milk but now anything milky he wants so I’ve got smoothies and shakes and will go to the chemist. The skin in the anal area seems to be getting worse not better but the nurse did say this wasn’t unusual. He had painkillers door the first time last night so I know things aren’t great but I need to plod on!!
