Waiting for Biopsy

Hi everyone,

I'm another newbie at the start of the journey. Got a colonoscopy at the start of November which found a 5cm anal tumor and following blood in my poo and after CT and MRI was due my MDT appointment two weeks ago. That got delayed a week as biopsy wasnt ready then it got delayed another week as the biopsy still wasnt back. Im getting paranoid now that im going to get the delay again! How long after colonoscopy is it usual to wait for biopsy results? Im just seeing Chistmas and associated delays rapidly approaching!

  • Hi Rhod04671,

They usually estimate a few days to several weeks to hear back after a colonoscopy/biopsy. This could be with results or an appointment for further investigation. Did your doctor give you an estimated time frame? If not, it may be worth giving them a call to discuss wait times just to put your mind at ease. Also, keep an eye on your NHS app as that is often the fastest way to view your results.

Sending lots of love your way!

  • The first appointment was cancelled when i was in the hospital car park with the promise it would be the next week but then that was pushed back again so my confidence in the dates given isnt the best.

  • Hello Rhod0d4671,

Really sorry about your diagnosis and the wait you are having for your biopsy results. Also wanted to say welcome to the forum.

I can only comment on my own experience and hope it’s helpful. I had my biopsy in early July year. Like you I was given a follow on appointment ( 3 weeks later) but the results were unavailable. I had been told 2 weeks.

I eventually got them 6 weeks later after lots of phoning round. I have no idea if that’s normal, but I do remember the anxiety of waiting and sorry that you are in this position.

I completed treatment last November and so far the outcome has been successful with no evidence of cancer.

I hope you hear back and get your treatment plan soon.  Xx

  • Hi Rhod

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis and recent delays with the biopsy but welcome to the forum.

It can vary and should be as soon as possible but just for context, I had my colonoscopy in January plus an MRI and CT with contrast, didn’t have my biopsy until late March so results not back until the end of March, Biopsy to results was about 10 days and I got results over the phone due to the delay in getting the biopsy done. So my first Oncology consultation wasn’t until mid April, in fact it was such a long gap that I had to have another MRI before they could do planning, so I did as the Oncologist if that meant the tumour had grown or changed but it hadn’t.

During treatment there was a bank holiday but the department stayed open and treatment went ahead, although the hospital in general was very quiet.

I hope you get this sorted soon as I know how stressful this waiting period can be.

  • Hi  , firstly welcome to the MacMillan Online Community although I’m really sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis & the delays you’re experiencing with your biopsy results.

I received my diagnosis early 2018, it took 7 days from biopsy to getting my results & diagnosis, they had estimated 7-10 days.

I know it shouldn’t be this way but never be afraid to chase up results, the waiting around really messes with your emotions.

I really hope you hear something very soon.

  • Hello

I am really sorry that you have had to find yourself here and also to hear of your diagnosis.  I think I had about a seven or eight day wait which I found bad enough so I can completely understand your frustration and worry.  I would keep ringing the hospital and anyone connected with your case.

As far as I know, most hospitals carry on with treatment  regardless of which holidays fall and I would be very surprised if your biopsy result isn't already winging its way back to your team.

Please let us know how you get on and when your treatment is due to start.  This is a wonderfully supportive forum where everyone helps each other and we have lots of tips and coping mechanisms we can share.

    Big hug

    Irene xx
