Hi I start my treatment on the 7th November and some family members feel we should tell two of our grandchildren who are 4 and 6 years old as we won’t be able to see them as much as we would normally because of catching gems etc. I don’t agree I feel they are too young and as adults we should protect them at such a young age. They have found a good book on Amazon about cancer. Fills me with dread to be honest!!! Do people still see their grandchildren through treatment?? So worried what to do for best.
Thanks Sue I think you are right too I’d just feel so bad if the news bothered them or spoilt Christmas for them. I’m just not sure what to do for the best. I hate the thought of not being honest but as a adult feel I should protect them but like Irene and yourself yours have coped extremely well.
Hi GreenNanny, reading the comments here in response to your enquiry shows that we all know our families and what suits one may not necessarily suit another. You know your grandchildren better than any of us. I think we can get hung up about what the right thing to say is. If like some have said here to mention in a matter of fact kind of way is the way to go and they can grasp without fear only you can know that. I would not suggest lying to them but by telling them what you are prepared to say is your call. I am sure near your start date you will know what you want to do. Take care
I can completely understand why you are confused, and remember you don't have to decide now; why not play it by ear further down the line? I think the important thing is (if you decide to go ahead) not to make a huge thing out of it. I saw some children's books that explained cells dividing and multiplying and the consequences I think THAT was too much detail and could plant the seed of real horror in a child's mind.
My biggest problem at the moment are my haemorroids - I became constipated with the pain relief at the end of the treatment in March and they have never died down. They are worse than I had after giving birth! I have stenosis in my back passage following treatment and so the problem is ongoing. I went to my GP last week, she was most sympathetic and is referring me to a consultant. Other than that, I am between scans - no treatment at the moment.
Take good care of yourself, GreenNanny, and count the days off on your appointment card!
Irene xx
