Hi everyone,

I am newly diagnosed and before treatment the surgeon consultant is doing an examination and additional biopsies next Thursday under anaesthetic. They have initially staged it on the scans initial biopsy (it was an incidental find) and digital examination as a Stage 2 tumour in my anal canal (T2 N0 M0) I am just wondering if anyone has undergone the treatment who is. Type 1 Diabetic and how this impacted your Diabetes management with side effects etc.

thanks

  • Hi   I personally don't have diabetes and I can't recall anyone posting about diabetes and side effects recently.   Hopefully someone with some experience of this will read this and share their experience.  Obviously this is also something that should be discussed with your Oncologist.  Sorry I can't be of more help.  Bev

Hi 1in1500, thanks for your response, I’ve made my oncologist aware and my diabetes nurse so hopefully we can keep an eye on it fingers crossed.

  • Hi ,

Like Bev I don’t have personal experience of diabetes & don’t recall anyone posting about this but you’ve done everything right in making both you oncologist & diabetes nurse aware, I’m sure they’ll take good care of you. I hope someone that is more aware of how treatment may impact diabetes control will see your post & offer some advice.

All the very best of luck next Thursday for your examination & biopsy, I hope all goes well & you get a treatment plan in place soon.

I was diagnosed with diabetes when I went in for a biopsy - I had no idea and no risk factors. It's not the same as you, as it's probably Type 2, but the team have reassured me that they often treat people with diabetes and have ways of managing it. The trick is to try and get the diabetes team to communicate with the oncologist and vice versa; not always easy! I think the important questions are around what to do if the treatment makes you vomit, and what to do if you don't feel able to eat. I have a telephone consultation coming up with a dietician to discuss ways of managing what I eat during treatment. I'd ask for a referral, as they might be able to suggest different options depending on how you respond. Good luck with it all. Lesley

Thanks LesB, that’s reassuring I’ll try to encourage them to speak to each other as well as me. I’ve just got to get past Thursday when I have my EUA and additional biopsies and then I can look at sSlight smilerting treatment apparently Slight smile
