Hi all my brother who has severe heart problems has just been diagnosed with mild AML. He has been told they will keep checking his bloods and if necessary give him a transfusion if needed. Other than that he has told with his heart condition there’s not a lot they can do. They might be able to give him a mild chemo drug if the condition gets worse. He’s not keen on taking chemo drugs as he’s already on about 19 tablets a day with only 25% of his heart working.
Anyone on here have any idea of mild AML and how long it can remain mild without treatment.
Hi sorry to hear about your brothers diagnosis. I am Mike Thehighlander and help out around our blood cancer groups, I don’t have AML but NHL,
I can understand the logic behind what his consultants are saying as some of the chemos used in blood cancer are very very strong but as to your final question the only people who can answer this is question is his team.... but I do know a number of people who lived relatively normal happy lives on maintenance treatments.
It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service can give lots of information, support or just a listening ear. We also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.
To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers can be found on our Online Information and Support Section.
((hugs))
All the very best
Thanks for that Mike, I’m already aware of the Macmillan support as I had breast cancer last year. I’m a survivor but just wanted to ask the question to members as sometimes you get different information from those who have experienced it.
Yes I had seen your other posts, the AML group is a lot less busy than the Breast Cancer Group but lets see who is looking in.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
