World Cup final - sorting everything quickly

Hiya

My Dad has stage four kidney cancer which has spread to lung and lymph nodes. He’s not been eating so is on meal replacement drinks and we’re seeing a dietician next week.

We have conditional tickets to the World Cup final if England make it there - and it would be his absolute dream come true if we did. The thing is, he’s recently finished his course of treatment and I’m not sure he’d be up for it.

That said, as it’ll obviously be a very quick turnaround I wondered if anyone had any advice with which specific insurance to use please? And if, you had to get a GP to complete the fit to fly form.

thank you in advance

  • Hello ,

Now that's a great thing to think of for your Dad. I don't follow football so didn't know when the final takes place and having just googled it see it's 19th July? That's cutting it fine to say the least.

The last thing I want to do is put a dampener on your plans, but I think you need to establish a few issues very quickly.

    My first thoughts are:

    1. Is Dad fit to fly? I think this is the first thing to establish because, if not, the plan won't work. If you've got a good GP who can act straight away, this might be OK. However, I'd suspect Dad's hospital medical team would be the best to confirm either way if you can get his consultant / oncologist to confirm or otherwise, hopefully very quickly if you get on to them first thing Monday morning and ask them to pull the stops out.

    2. You'll need insurance. Based on my experience (I have incurable but treatable prostate cancer) one of the only insurers I could find to give me cover at a reasonable price was Holidaysafe. You can access them as well as a couple of others via a comparison site called Albert & Eddie (https://www.albertandeddie.co.uk/). They are part of the same group that owns Holidaysafe, Insurancewith and a couple of others. The medical questions they ask are more "user friendly" than many others so you could try them. You might find it useful, in view of timescale, to go online and work through their health questions before contacting Dad's medical team about fitness to fly in case you come up with any insurance health questions you need to ask his medical team about so that you can answer them accurately.

I do hope you can make some progress. Come back if there's anything more and I'll do my best to help. I'm currently in the USA on holiday in a time zone 8 hours behind UK time, so there might be a little time lag.

    Derek.
