Malignant Melanoma

I recently had a lesion removed from my back and the histology confirmed a malignant melanoma. The plan going forward is for a further wide local excision of the site and a sentinel lymph node biopsy. This won't be for another two to three months and the Consultant is happy for me to travel. My problem comes when answering the question on the travel insurance declaration page for MM. It wants to know if the lesion is just in the skin, has it spread to the lymph, has it spread to other areas of the body? These are simple yes or no questions with no opportunity for I don't know! I am visiting family in Australia and as the cancer journey ahead of me is unknown I really don't want to delay or cancel my trip. I tried calling the company but the man on the phone just asked me the same questions I'd read myself online. Any advice on the best insurance companies please? Thinking

  • Which company have you tried? If not already suggest try albert&eddie online (you can get a quote there and then 'phone if necessary for clarification of any issues). This is a comparison website generally using insurers who utilise a different question set from most others.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the group

I had melanoma nearly 9 years ago now and, unfortunately, it's definitely more difficult to get reasonably priced travel insurance after a cancer diagnosis.

It's important to make sure you've answered the questions correctly so going through the application over the phone, although more time consuming, I found to be better because you can clarify something with the person on the phone. I know you've tried to do this but maybe some of the more specialist insurance companies that are recommended in this group would be better for you to deal with.

If you don't get the insurance cover you need via the recommendation from excavator then do have a look through the 'recommended travel insurance' and 'recommended travel insurance 2023-24' threads, as you'll find lots of suggestions for travel insurance there.

I hope you're able to sort your travel insurance out and carry on with your planned trip to Australia.
