Hi everyone,

We have received some feedback that you would like a more recent recommended travel insurance thread set up.

The lovely @latchbrook set up the original 'recommended travel insurance thread' which you can still view here. Just so you don't have to go through the different pages of information to find recent recommendations, you can find the most recent experiences in this thread.

Please note, all recommendations are from Community members and are not recommendations from Macmillan. Please do your own research as to whether the companies are suitable for you.

This thread can be used to update the group when you've found an insurance company that provided you with cover at a reasonable cost from a recommendation you found here or elsewhere.

If you could put a little bit of additional information eg. whether you got a single trip or annual, cover for a cruise, worldwide, etc along with anything else that you think others would find helpful when they are researching that would be great.

You may also find reading Macmillan's 'Finding travel insurance when you are living with cancer' blog useful

  • I’ve tried them they wouldn’t insure me as I got stage 4 lung cancer

  • I’ve got stage 4 stomach cancer and spread to liver plus lymph nodes. I was surprised by how cheap it was . Also I’m on no meds and got longer than 6 months to live . Also have permission from oncologist to travel.
I guess it’s all done on individual circumstances.
sorry to hear they won’t cover you .
I was willing to travel without any insurance until I saw this post .

  • I also answered 'No'.

The doctor advised that, although it is incurable now, it is not 'end stage' and to avoidusingthe wordtermial at this stage.

It seems people's interpretation of the words 'terrmial' and 'palliative' can vary.

Insurance is ridiculous....a bit of a scam in my opinion, but necessary I guess.

  • I’m terminal with stage 4 lung cancer  even when you tell the insurance companies your this, they either want thousands or won’t insure you at all. I just don’t know who else will insure me.

  • Hi Evan. My husband is also stage 4  terminal and we had lots of trouble finding travel insurance. I was told about a comparison site called Medical Travel Compared and they gave us a quote with a company called GoodToGo Insurance. We were honest and told them my husband was terminal and that he had also had a heart attack in April. Not only did they insure my husband but it was a good price.

They were so reasonable we've used them again for trips to Irish Republic and an upcoming holiday to Lanzarote.

I hope they can help you too.

  • I have incurable stage 4 bowel cancer. I'd booked a family holiday to Barbados and had almost given up on insurance - either no quote or ridiculous amounts of money (£6,680). I heard similar tales but which ended with reasonable quotes from insurewith.com so I tried them and took a quote of just under £400. I've no idea why the massive difference, and I guess the proof is only if you are unfortunate enough to have to claim, but it gave me the comfort blanket I was looking for. I recommend trying insurewith.com if you haven't already because everyone else is trying to make a killing out of our misfortune

  • I shall try them, I’ve must have tried about twenty companies, only 3 would insure me but still wanted between £1500 - £2400 for a week so god knows how much it would be for 2 wks. I just can’t justify paying there prices.

  • Hi All,

Thought I'd share my experience getting cover for a week's holiday in Lanzarote with a diagnosis of low grade Lymphoma. I first tried Medical Travel Compared but the cheapest quotes were over £660. I then went direct to https://www.insurewithease.com and ended up with an annual European policy with several additions (more hazardous activities, cover for natural disasters etc) for under £80. I also went via Top Cash Back to save 15%. I did everything online, and apart from the text on their website being a bit small, everything was very quick and easy. I hope that helps a few others. Looking forward to my break in the sun now! Sunglasses

  • Hi Ken, I get the impression that there is a higher rate for cruises, not sure why, but they always ask very specifically if there is a cruise element to the holiday. Hope you get your cruise and have a great experience.

    All the best
