£4,700 for 2 weeks in Boston??

Hi, hope someone can help.  I have Chronic Lymphacytic Leukaemia - on active treatment and have never felt better.  Also, I had a minute Breast Cancer 18 months ago that was removed and no further treatment needed.  In addition I have 6 other notifiable conditions, including Bronchiectasis, which precludes me from using either the Forces Insurance Service and the Civil Service one.  My husband has 4 notifiable conditions - we are both 72.

We have travelled the world since my diagnosis 11 years ago, and although I've had to shop around, have always managed to get reasonably affordable travel insurance.  We went to Australia for 2 weeks over Christmas and I was shocked to have to pay over £700 for the insurance.  BUT that pales into insignificance against the quotes I've got for 2 weeks in America in April for our grandsons birthday.  The cheapest is £4700+ and the most expensive £10,000+!!!!!

Can anyone offer me any hope of being able to go on the trip?

I've had suggestions of trying to exclude some of the conditions, or going for separate policies for each of us.

Help!!!

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

A trip to Boston sounds lovely but, unfortunately, it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced travel insurance when you've had a cancer diagnosis.

I haven't been to America since being diagnosed, so I can't recommend a company specifically, but have you had chance to look at the recommendations in the 'recommended travel insurance' thread yet? If not, clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there. You might also want to look at this thread as it includes a link to a Travel Insurance Directory.

Most people recommend that it's best to phone the insurance companies rather than try and do online quotes as often at the end of the online quote it will tell you to phone the company and you'll then have to go through all the information again. Also, sometimes the broker can refer to the underwriters to see if they would provide cover when an online quote might just give you a straight refusal.

Do come back and let us know how you get on
