Annual policy cancelled and no refund

We are still trying to come to terms with a terminal cancer diagnosis.  Shortly before my husband became ill and we received his diagnosis we took out an annual travel insurance policy covering both of us and our children.

The insurance company are cancelling the annual policy for all of us and refuse to provide a pro rata refund.

They will not continue to cover me or our children (no health issues) and agree that we will have to buy a new policy covering us if we want to travel and have insurance in the next 9 months.

I asked how this was fair but they insist this is permitted by their underwriting terms.

We wanted the children to be able to go away with friends but have to buy new cover.  The insurance company have taken more than £100 from us for cover they refuse to provide.  I know that our circumstances have changed and they don’t want to provide cover for my husband but why should they keep the profit from the annual premium?

  • I’m so sorry to hear of your problems. There are several things here

As far as the insurance provider is concerned, you’ve had cover since you took out the policy whether or not you travelled, hence no refund.

It may be that their refusal to continue cover for the family is that any cover for future trips would require a new risk assessment because, for example, if your children booked a holiday and your husband’s condition worsened the t&c almost certainly exclude cover if they wanted to cancel or wished to return home early. That’s because of a known condition eg a serious health issue of a close family member.

I know that’s not what you want to hear. One thing I do recommend is checking the T&c of any policy you’re considering before booking a trip to ensure covers included cancellation or curtailment by family members as a result of your husband’s condition. If it’s not clear, check and get it in writing. Good luck.

    I wish you well.
