Travel insurance for Med cruise?

I’ve got stage 4 inoperable pancreatic cancer. Really hoping to do a Mediterranean cruise with my husband and teenagers in the summer.

Want to find out if I can get insurance ideally before I book - any suggestions about companies to start with? (This will be the first time I’ve traveled abroad since my diagnosis in Nov 2020.)

Thanks!

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

A Mediterranean cruise sounds idyllic and you're certainly doing the right thing in checking that you can obtain insurance before booking it.

Unfortunately, it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced travel insurance when you've had a cancer diagnosis.

I don't know if you've had chance to look through the 'recommended travel insurance' thread yet, as it's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are. If not, clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there. You might also want to look at this thread as it includes a link to a Travel Insurance Directory.

Lots of people here recommend that it's best to phone the insurance companies rather than try and do online quotes as often at the end of the online quote it will tell you to phone the company and you'll then have to go through all the information again. Also sometimes the broker can refer to the underwriters to see if they would provide cover when an online quote might just give you a straight refusal.

Make sure that you have all the information to hand about your diagnosis and treatment before contacting the insurers. This is a list of things an insurance provider might want to know when you're applying for insurance. Some providers might ask for a letter from your doctor saying that you are well enough to travel. This could come from your cancer team or GP.

Do come back and let us know how you get on

  • Thanks , I'll have a look at the directory. I had discovered the recommended travel insurance thread but a lot of the recommendations were a few years old and things have changed a lot! Will start doing a trawly through the list!!

  • Hi

You're right that a lot of the recommendations are a few years old but that's probably because once they've been recommended others haven't re-recommended them, if you see what I mean. It's still a good place to start. I've recently taken out travel insurance with payingtoomuch.com and found them easy to deal with both on the phone and using their website.
