Hi everyone I’m so confused. My husband has been diagnosed with locally advanced adenocarcinoma of pancreas not metazised he is on GemCap chemo treatment to try and slow it down oncologist calls the treatment palliative care. When I have looked at holiday travel insurance cover I get asked is it a terminal diagnosis I’m unsure how to answer this question because although it can’t be operated on due to it being near a main vein does this make it a terminal diagnosis this was only found due to an accidental find and was being monitored for 18 months because husband had no pancreas symptoms until a biopsy was done and they found a slow growing tumour any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

  • Hello Mary7678,

I think the only way you can answer this is to ask the oncologist. I was told palliative does not automatically mean terminal but you need to provide the correct answer to an insurer to avoid them turning down a claim should you need to make one.

It's perhaps worth mentioning that most travel insurers only ask is it terminal or not - and in most cases decline to quote if you have to say terminal - or charge a huge amount. However, a handful (at least Insurancewith and Holidaysafe to my knowledge but there may be others) ask if you've been told your condition cannot be cured (rather than asking terminal) then if you say yes they ask if your short term outlook is less than or over 6 months. I'm incurable but outlook is more than 6 months so can safely say that. I got reasonable annual worldwide quotes from both the above.

I hope you can get sorted out to be able to you to get away.

    Derek.
