Hello, recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and when calling mcmillan had the best advisor ever however as I was unable to give my husbands details was asked to call back and got a person that was less than helpful amd made me feel like a benefit cheat!
I have never claimed any benefits and I am now 40yrs, obviously worried that I have been told I am only entitled to SSP wich is less a week than I make in a day. I had planned I'm work through my treatment however my cancer nurse said to leave through diseases as I work on a nursery with under 2 Yr old.
Worried how I am supposed to support myself and house though out. Has anyone else been in the same situation?
Sorry for the long post
Hi Gaisgeach
It’s Megan here from Macmillan’s Online Community team. I’d firstly like to wish you a further warm welcome to the site. We see every day how helpful it can be for members to connect with others who share similar experiences and access peer support when you need it.
I’m sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis and how a recent contact with the Support Line has left you feeling.
To have your concerns investigated and addressed, please could you share more details with us by completing this feedback form here. They can investigate your concerns and make sure the advice you were given is correct.
I appreciate that you have not had the best experience with contacting the Support Line. We would still like the chance to help. There are Nurses and Support advisors who can talk through treatment and diagnosis questions you may have, alongside offering emotional support when you need it. They’re available 7 days a week, 8 am-8 pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00, email, or live webchat.
We do hope you will still use the Online Community to share your personal experiences and access peer support when you need it. There is a friendly community of members in the Breast cancer forum that I am sure will come by to show their support if you were to talk about your situation or ask questions.
In the meantime, I would like to share a link to the Breast Cancer now website, where there is some information about the financial support available.
I do hope the above information is useful, and if you have any questions or need help using the site, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch. You can email Community@macmillan.org.uk or send a private message to the Moderator account.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
