I was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in late August after suffering symptoms for yonks before then.
I was referred for a PET scan, bloodwork ect at a specialist hospital.
The results showed no spread so my local hospital decided to get the ball rolling and did pre op and hearing nothing back from the cancer specialist MDT booked me in for a right hemicolectomy.
That was supposed to be happening tomorrow.
Friday evening a NET specialist consultant or whoever decided the operation needs to happen in the specialist centre, they strong armed my local hospital into cancelling all plans they had for me and now are expecting me to travel a 4 hour round trip to for 9:30am Friday for a conversation about an operation I should have already had by then!!!
I am furious.
I know they're supposed to be the better option, but don't I have a choice in how I am treated? Does the 'me' surrounding the tumour count for anything??
Hi Granitewave
I am sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with cancer at the end of August and that you are still waiting for treatment to begin. I can understand that it is really frustrating to be building up to having surgery and then at the last minute for them to decide to refer you to another hospital.
I hope that your appointment on Friday goes well and that you can be booked in to have the surgery asap. I know for me with my own cancer I saw my consultant for the first time on a Friday and was sent straight away for a pre op and had surgery on the Monday. My experience was once I actually got to see the surgeon- things did move quickly.
You are of course the most important thing in all of this and you do absolutely have choices about the treatments that you receive and where you have them. I understand that it is also frustrating that you now have to travel further afield for the surgery but I suppose that the main thing is that it is done safely and with the best qualified specialists around you. I know for me when I had my cancer diagnosis, things did feel very out of control and that it could feel overwhelming.
It sounds like you have had quite a journey in getting a diagnosis after having symptoms for so long. If it would help to talk things through, please do give the Support Line a call.
I hope that your surgery can go ahead quickly now you have been referred to the specialist hospital but in the meantime if there is anything you need, please do ask.
Jane
Thank you for your reply.
I highly doubt I'll be getting surgery anywhere near as soon as Monday, this appointment they've booked for me for Friday is labeled new patient consultation.
I'm not sure if I have to do pre op again with this hospital too since my local did it last week? But I at least get to meet the team ect first, right?
This might sound so ungrateful of me but I don't want the 'best' I literally don't care if this guy can do it faster with better equipment and leave a smaller scar whatever qualifiers that would make his surgery 'better'.
I wanted the cancer removed and I wanted to wake up and work on recovering and getting my life back on track. I had a plan for exactly that and it was taken from me without a second thought.
Also with the anxiety side of things, I know my local hospital, I know the area, I'm a 20 minute Uber ride away from home, it's 1 bus for my 18 year old son to come visit me ect.
I don't know this new place, the location, it's so far from home, it'll be very difficult for my family to visit. Maybe some people don't care about these parts of it but thinking holistically instead of just about my tumour all those things matter to me.
