Hello everyone.
My mum got confirmation yesterday from the Oncologist with untreatable (given her physical health) secondary peritoneal cancer. We've been waiting for diagnosis confirmation since I took her to hospital just after Xmas. My brother has been abroad since then but made it back to be at the appointment yesterday.
I've spent the last few weeks getting my head around the possible prognosis but he's been in denial. I thought he took in what the consultant had to say to us yesterday but wants to explore a second opinion.
What is the point? Her hospital doctors are not morons and I'm sure there is a national care treatment pathway. I also think lay men don't understand reproductive cancers.
Am I doing the right thing by trusting in the doctors and not worrying about a second opinion, I just want her to be as healthy and comfortable as poss for as long as poss and not give her false hope, I know this partciular cancer is really unpredictable, I've had mothers of 2 friends die with it in the past year. Mum is 87. normal chemo/sugery not an option.
xx
Hi Caro N26
Welcome to our community, I hope you find it both informative and supportive.
An issue with going for a second opinion can be that it can delay any options on treatment and as you note may not make any significant difference otherwise. Of course the only person who can really make the decision is your mother and hopefully you can both support her whatever she decides.
<<hugs>>
Steve
