My dad received his results today and he AML with 6 mutations.

They have said that he won't tolerate intensive treatments and only thing they can do is manage symptoms and blood transfusions.

The prognosis isnt great they have said 12 months max. He has other long term health issues to contend with.

Im a loan parent with my own long term health conditions which affect mood and mobility. I have no idea how I'm going to explain things to my very sensitive 7 year old daughter who adores her granddad. The decision is not to tell her yet, but I'm trying to keep it together whilst she presses.

I feel utterly lost

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

You might find this booklet from Macmillan on talking to children and teenagers when an adult has cancer helpful. You can view it online, download it or send for a physical copy.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Thank you, I'm still trying to process. I'm going to mention it to her teacher at parents evening to see how best to navigate this
