Mum's cancer diagnosis

Hi,

I am looking for some support and advice really.

My mum was diagnosed with Lung Cancer at the end of June, during the consultation they explained that unfortunately there were no treatment options due to othe health related issues (eg COPD, Kidney Stone) She had also lost weight and although she has always been small was 32kg.

The Macmillan nurse was present and explained that she would be there to support us and my mum with the diagnosis and medication etc..

Over the last three weeks she has deteriorated eg at points has struggled to swallow, increase in sickness (she has cyclizine) but this has become less effective. Then last week she was admitted to hospital with an infection and stomach cramps/pain. Plus she used to be able to go upstairs on her own suddenly can't stand for long and struggles to walk unaided. She has also dropped to 28kg.

I called the Macmillan team and they said as it was not related to her cancer they would not normally do anything but that the nurse would visit her in hospital. She visited and explained she would not visit her for another 8wks. I explained to them about my mum's pain and everything above and the fact because she sleeps a lot she is missing taking her tramadol and could she have slow releasing pain relief eg oxycodone or something similar (I used to work in a Hospital) but they have not offered anything.

I have also asked about support at home... Nothing

I explained we all go 4 days a week but cannot increase the care, but I feel like we are not getting any support and that they want to discharge her home today and have said as she is medically fit! (Obviously not) But she won't be able to get to the toilet etc?

Could anyone point me in direction or give me any advice?

  • Hi Barneymia, and a warm welcome to the forum, I am so sorry to hear about your mum and the situation you find yourself in, one I shared with you. So understand what an awful situation you find yourself in and how emotionally difficult it is for you. You should call your mums GP and ask for a referral for the district nurses and palliative care team, they have been a big help to me and hopefully for you and your mum, best wishes.

  • Hi,

Thank you, I will contact the Drs and see if they can support her at home and look at adaptations etc.

I hope you have the support and care you need going forward.

    Best Wishes

    Jo

  • Thank you Jo, I have the support of my hospice and their palliative care team and my district nurse for nearly a year now, I hope your mum can access them to support her and you, I remember how tough it is caring for a loved one and hope you remember you need to look after yourself too, best wishes with the GP.

  • Thank you. I am hoping we can access the support she needs, we are just disappointed about the lack of macmillan support.

  • Understandable your disappointed with Macmillan as their usually so good, maybe worth calling them to see why things are the way they are. Marie Curie and AgeUK would be worth calling as well and try your council too, best wishes
