Rectal Cancer - End of life

My father has stage 4 rectal cancer - all treatment was stopped in October 23.

He is now extremely weak and does little day-to-day - he is still able to get from his bed to his arm chair and to the bathroom but that is all.

He eats a little, is very pale and sometimes confused - he sleeps frequently throughout the day.

I am looking for advice in how to help him manage double incontinence - we have all the pads, underwear etc but wondering if something can be prescribed to help minimise accidents and also the symptoms of lazy bowel caused by an ileostomy and reversal.

I would also appreciate any experiences anyone has had supporting someone through the end of life with rectal cancer - most especially key signs to be aware of and rough time lines/frames.

Thank you in advance

  • Hi

I don't have the experience you're looking for but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

I noticed that you'd also posted this in Ask a Nurse where you've had a great reply from one of the nurses. If you haven't seen it yet pop over there to see their suggestions.

Thank you for taking the time to read and for 'bumping' the post.

I have seen the post from the nurse and whilst I'm appreciative it doesn't provide the info I am looking for.

I am looking for anyone's personal experience with prescribed medication for incontinence towards end of life

I would welcome very frank information regarding the end of life with rectal cancer. I know for many people this is too hard to talk about or to revisit. I cared for my mother when she died of cancer so already have some experience with end of life but am very aware that this can look quite different with different types of cancer so was hoping for any more detailed information.

Thank you again for taking time to read and respond x
