From curable to terminal

In November 2022 I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer after having problems eating. Things seemed to move quite quickly as appointments came thick and fast,  from a consultant to a surgeon. Three different scans later I was informed that I had esophageal cancer and also a small separate lung cancer , I was told that they were both curable with operations,  the esophageal being quite large would be done first after 8 weeks of chemotherapy. The first operation was finally scheduled for June this year,  the results of the scan after cemo were promising but I was having a lot of problems eating and was loosening too much weight.  They decided to do a new set of scans which unfortunately found that the cancer had spread to my bones And liver.  My new prognosis is now six months at that time I was coping quite well with the news, I am not afraid to die but I have been lashing out at my wife for no reason and even though she says it doesn't matter I know it does,  I feel so ashamed of the way I talk to her , and I do apologise I just wish I could stop myself.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your prognosis has changed and it must be a very difficult thing to come to terms with.

As you know, the online community is divided up into different support groups, so I'm going to recommend that you join the living with incurable cancer group as you'll then connect with others who are also living with an incurable diagnosis.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here, and join in with existing conversations by clicking on reply.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
