Hello

My mum has recently been diagnosed with extensive stage 4 small cell lung cancer. We had the oncologist appointment and they said they can't help her with chemo or radiotherapy as the cancer is evading her major blood vessels and the therapy would shrink it and it would leave whole in her blood vessels and cause her to bleed out. They said the cancer is acting as a plug and stopping her from bleeding atm. They said with out treatment she would have 4 months to live. But that's based on the indivual and how quick her deterioration would take. We are so devesated. So heartbroken. I work and I'm trying to help my mum the best I can. I have took some time off work but that's a doc sick note. I can no longer do this as It can not cover my bills. So I need to do my shifts but it so difficult as well as I need to help amd spemd as much time with my mum as well. Me and my husband are really strugerling with everything. My mum is not coping at all as she thought she could be able to fight this. My mum is only 59, I know there's people out there with cancer much younger than this but I can't seem to accept this news.

  • Hi

I'm very sorry to read of your mum's diagnosis. It must have been an awful shock for all of you. It is all the more shocking because she is unable to have treatment. I am stage 4 myself so have some idea of devastating news but I cannot begin to understand your mum's prognosis and how she must be feeling. I am going to give you some contacts and strongly suggest that you get in touch because there is a lot of help out there, it's just knowing where to look.

I would firstly contact the Macmillan helpline, the advisors are excellent and will give good advice and contacts. This is the link https://www.macmillan.org.uk/about-us/contact-us

They will advise you on benefits, PIP, carers allowance and any grants you may be eligible for. Your mum's CNS may have referred her to Macmillan already, it may be worth querying this with her.

Citizens advice can advise on financial, housing and employment issues www.citizensadvice.org.uk

I hope I haven't bombarded you but I would urge you to get some support for your mum and yourselves. Best regards.
