Father coming to the end

My father was diagnosed with MDS I think around 2 years ago. He is 79 and has had other health issues (heart-bi pass) in his early 60's. So they advised they would monitor his levels. They have been getting worse and currently receives 2 bags of blood in a transfusion each week. However this does not seem to be helping but I guess its hard to know what would happen if he never got any..

The last few weeks he has gotten much worse no appetite, mobility decreased and very very tired. The weight he has lost is concerning. He was a biggish man but now he is very fragile. He is now in hospital with an infection which has caused a spell of delirium and serve confusion. Its sooooooooooooooo hard watching someone you care about be a strong figure and then a shadow of themselves..

Anyone have any advice about what care can be provided at home as mum is also old and cannot look my father as well as herself?

Kind regards

  • Hi

I'm sorry to hear about your father. As you say, it is upsetting to see someone fading away before your eyes. As your father is currently in hospital, it is usual for the hospital team to ensure that your mum is supported at home. This is usually what they call a care package. It ensures that any equipment needed will be delivered, eg a hospital bed, stand aids etc. It could also be carers visits to help with your father's daily care. If your father's care is now considered palliative, Hospice UK and Marie Curie can provide information and support. Their websites are listed below

    www.hospiceuk.org

    www.mariecurie.org.uk

If you feel you need to speak to someone the Macmillan support helpline is open and they are excellent, this is the link to contact https://www.macmillan.org.uk/about-us/contact-us

I hope you find the support you need, best regards to you and your family.

    A x
