My husband has stage 4 cancer.  Initially in his  bile duct but after a whipples in February  and 5 months if hope, a scan showed  it had migrated to his liver. He is getting another scan in December to see if his new chemo/immunotherapy has slowed it down at all. Apart from some tiredness, he has no symptoms of illness,  or any side effects from the  chemo. He's very optimistic,  but what  do I say to him if the scan shows the treatment hasn't helped?

  • Hi

So sorry to Hear about your husband. My mum has had quite a spread to the liver , over ten mets , five one year and five the next . If you click on my user name you can read how her team managed it but it was a bowel spread which may be different to the bile duct primary spread .

However we are seeing some good responses in the bowel cancer community to immunotherapy and it sounds as though he is tolerating it well .

Does bile duct cancer use a tumour marker ? Sometimes that gives you a feel for if  treatment is reducing the numbers . Even although scan is the more reliable method it might give you some insight .

My mum has had three recurrence over 13 years . I guess for us until she is out of treatment options we press on and live with as much encouragement as we can muster . One day at a time . If there were no other treatment options we would change track .

If one plan does not work we explore other options .

It is not easy watching this process and has many challenges but a few wins along the way too .

Although it has popped up again for mum there has been long periods of successful treatment.

    Take care ,

    Court
