What to do

We were told at end of October my mum has around 6 months with us. At the moment she is as well as she has been for the passed year. I have been off a couple of weeks to help her get things in order and get my head around it. I worried about going back to work as my job has a lot of risk and responsibilities but I know I’ll need time off at some stage to care for my mum when her condition deteriorates. I worry that there will be issues at work but worry about missing out on time I won’t get back with mum and a tiny part of me wonders what of drs are wrong and we will have much longer. I was wondering the experience of others, I just feel so confused and frustrated all the time.

  • Hi my situation is slightly different as our time frame has been so much quicker. My dad was diagnosed 8 weeks ago. I had the odd day off when issues arose but managed to keep working thru the help of St Margaret's, carers and District nurses until last week when we had to say it was unmanageable anymore and unfortunately my dad has gone into a hospice which is around 50 minutes from me. Therefore, with childcare commitments too I have finally had to get signed off work in order to be able to see him everyday and also my mental health is now not good.  Before my dad came in, I went into work as a bit of 'normality' so I guess it depends how it is for you? How supportive are your work? And then unfortunately how reliant are you on your income and how much time off can you have paid? I'm so sorry this is happening to you too. Look after yourself

  • Thank you Lilred

So sorry about what’s happening with your dad. I appreciate hearing from others. I thought that work could be that bit of normal for me but then I worry I’ll make a mistakes then I worry I’ll regret not taking the time. Thank you for responding. Take care x
